I think it's a cliche which praises the rifle but understates the shooter's ability. The only test for it would be to have someone else beat you with your own rifle, figuratively speaking.

Time to bring this thread back up! Squirrel season is still rolling along here in Alabama.

Here's my Kibler SMR in .36 that I just finished. I've never done anything like this before, but it turned out alright and shoots awesome from what I can tell so far.

Jim's kits are a great resource for anybody that's somewhat handy and wants a great gun for their money. I'm over the moon with mine!

My only reservation is I think I wish I would have got it in .32 caliber $:-\$

I've got both 32 & 36 and like a 36 better. Both will demolish a squirrel if you make a bad shot. If I wanted something smaller it would be 29 cal.

that is a beautiful rifle! I may get a 36 next. everything I here about the Kibler kits is good. they look like most of the work is done, just a little fitting and finishing,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Thanks fellas! The hardest part of the kit was the buttplate. It took quite a bit of work. Had to fill the predrilled holes and scoot the plate in deeper a bit. Other than that, smooth sailing!

These things sure do handle and balance nice.

I thought i'd add my hot off the bench Squirrel shooter to the thread for posterity. .36 Kibler SMR with some light reshaping. Finished and patina'd with Kibler Aqua Fortis, Tannic Acid, Bone Black, and Chamber's Finish Oil. Scraped/burnished stock. Patch box made and engraved by Jim Parker. Lock engraving by Jerry Rice. Iron toe plate and nose cap by me. Sterling pipes, side plate, front sight, iron rear sight, and Sterling feather hole surround by me. (extra long Sterling pipes with wedding bands and octagonal shape as found on extant Whitson rifle. He used silver more than once, hence the silver touches). Thanks to CCF for helping me precisely position the sideplate.

Hope it holds up to scrutiny.

The first pic with a few of my other guns for scale for those who've not held a dainty little Southern squirrel rifle.

I'm up to my eyeballs in projects (house remodel) right now... But I'll take a browbeating from the Mrs. for a chance to build one similar to yalls'.

Go get ya one! More painless to ask forgiveness than permission.

Our rifles definitely show the different ways the kit can be finished.

Mike’s: Perfectly finished rifle by a talented artist, with sharp edges, symmetry, and overflowing with gorgeousness.

Bob’s: Roughly scrapped and burnished rifle by some guy in his garage, who rounded the edges, under finished it, and hopes it all looks on purpose.

I shot this Abert squirrel while I was scouting for elk. It was the only squirrel I saw that day. I shot it with my .36 rifle. After all a squirrel rifle rifle without a squirrel is just a rifle.

Those are both "eye candy" SMRs, IMO. I've used the .32 on squirrels quite a bit; but I prefer the .36, own both but can do with either. Those tiny .311" balls can be pretty difficult to handle when fingers are cold.
