Benjamin Dyer Southern Mountian Rifle PICTURES ADDED, Carter Co Tenn

I have a very large Iron mounted rifle attributed to Dyer as listed in Vol 1&2 of Notes on Southern Long Rifles.It's rear sight is "the only John Bull pattern Dan Wallace said he had seen on anything other than a John Bull Rifle
Has anyone seen a "Dyer" Rifle?
Ive owned this one since about 1973 or 74

It will take a while and I don't take real good photos.It's 50 cal.50 inch barrell.double swamped ground top 5 flats only.Bottom three flats are just hammered to rough shape.Dark tiger striped maple stock,all Iron mounted.Long Iron nose cap with 4 ramrod pipes.As I said before,it's in Jerry Nobles Books Vol1and 2.I've done a lot of Genealogical research on Dyer.He was born in N.C. build guns in Carter Co.Tenn.went to Missouri left his family there and went to Texas where he died near Dallas. Dan Wallace examined the gun just before his death and said it was most likly a Dyer

It sounds like maybe it is one of the unsigned guns in Jerry's books as  I don't recall seeing any signed Dyers in there - could you point out the page numbers if you know them?  That way we can get a look at it.  There are some great usigned guns in those books.

In Vol 1 look at bottom entry on page 43 and page 40 second entry.
In Vol 2 Jerry made a correction on page 35 The BCD are in Block Letters not script and I gave Jerry the Genealogical info of him going to Laclede County Missouri leaving his family there and going to Tarrant Co Texas where he died after 1880.

I took the rifle to the Tenn.Longrifle Show at Clinton Tenn this past weekend.Jerry Nobles was there and said he knows of another "Large" Dyer rifle in South Carolina owned by a Dr.
He said it is very similar to mine.

My Thanks to John for posting those old 35 mm photo's an going to take some new Digital shots this weekend.
I told John(by E mail)The gun was found in a barn west of Blythsville Ark.about 1960 with the butt stock burned off to the wrist.A collector/dealer/restorer in Scott Ark put the buttstock back on.I was told the Trigger Guard and the Buttplate were wired to the gun when found.I have been told many tines although they are forged they are not of the same quality as the rest of the gun Robbin Hale and Dan Wallace both said the gun should be restored"correctly".The Tang is of the style of Baxter Been and A early Bull(Two screws up close and circular around the smaller screws farther back toward the wrist.The tang is missing (broken off just before it would go up over the tang.

69 or 70 inches long
21/2 inch iron nosecap
43/8 inch rear ramrod pipe counting the extension
(4 ramrod pipes)
A neat CHUNK Gun
ORIGIONAL FLINT Lock is a roller Frizen which mau or may not be origional to gun.Lock bolts went thru a T plate and a Oval  which were filled in with wood.
