Big Knife
« on: April 14, 2010, 05:06:14 PM »
Just finished the 3rd knife in my Turtle Series. The blade was hand forged from 1084FG steel. The coffin shaped guard was forged from wagon tire wrought iron. The handle is Mule deer crown. OAL is 16-1/4". The blade is 10-1/4" long and 1-3/4" wide. Balance point is at the guard.
The sheath is made from veggie tan and covered with deer rawhide. The rawhide is sealed with old fashioned spar varnish. The belt loop can be removed for inside the belt/sash wear.
All comments welcome and thanks for looking.
Mike

All the series so far.

very good looking blade work Mike,   just curious though, what is 1084FG,  that doesn't ring a bell for me

1084 is a standard forging carbon steel for blades--the Fg is a variation with a little vanadium in it.  The 84 refers to approximate carbon content [.84%].

Very nice.  I also really like the way you did the sheath with the removable belt loop.  Great idea.

Very nice.  I especially like the coloring on the handle and leather.  I had to do a double check to make sure it wasn't something of Chuck's.  They have the right look.  Very appealing to the eye.

Very nice is Right. The sheath is really well done, how about a pic of the back? I am trying to see the stitching.

 Thanks, Tim C.

Thanks for the compliments everyone. Even being mentioned in the same sentence as Chuck Burrows is a great honor. Chuck is my hero.
Tim,  the rawhide is whip stitched along the edge. I'll try to post another pic tomorrow.

Tim, I didn't get a chance to make any more pics of the sheath because a gun and knife collector purchased all three knives today. He had seen the pics I posted and we met today.
I am still in shock. I know that all the positive comments here helped make the sale. He was repeating some of the comments.
Many thanks to all,
Mike
