New accessory
« on: April 16, 2010, 03:08:41 AM »
I ran across this today while looking for something else.  Looks pretty neat and fairly inexpensive.  There are numerous times when your whole stock, or a barrel need to be supported on the drill press for one reason or another.

Yes, this is a nifty gadget especially when working solo. I got mine at Woodcraft.

That IS nifty.   ;D

I've been using a camera tripod, works pretty good as it has a crank to adjust the height.  Having rollers would be a great addition though.

Thanks a bunch for the info.  I have been trying to find something like this to help support the stock and  barrel assembly when installing the pins.  This one looks as good as any I have found, and is a bit cheaper.

On my free standing drill press, I bolted  a 3/4" x2'x4' reinforced piece of plywood which stays there all the time. Very handy when drilling bbl lug and RR pipe holes all in one setup.....Fred

I've had one of these gismos on my drill press for about 3 years - it's very usefull.  My only complaint is that there is to much free space in the joints, so that with a load it shifts.  I ended up putting shims in many of the joints, which helps.  After a while you get used to it.   It is indeed very helpful supporting the ends of a rifle when drilling holes.

Fred, I'd like to see a picture of your jig, if you please.

Hi...it isn't a jig just a very stiff, re-inforced piece of plywood. To driil the pin holes, the bbl and stock are clamped in a very accurate vise and the bbl  top flat is clamped on the permanent jaw. A shim towards the muzzle levels the rifle and 2 parallel clamps hold the bbl and stock  together or the RR pipe and stock at each pinhole when drilling, a pin is inserted into the driiled hole and the clamps are moved to the next pin location. Just have to slide the assembly along and all the pins are drilled w/ the same setup. Kinda crude but it's worked on many LRs....Fred

I've made a coupll of floor standing, height adjustable, supports out of iron pipe and a roller. A piece os 8" chanel about a foot long gives them plenty of stability. I use one as outfeed for my tablesaw and another as drill press support. They really are easy and cheap to make  -  probably 25-30 bucks for all of them. My floor mounted vise sets on the same kind of pipe setup bolted to the concrete floor.

Of course, if you have to pay a welder labor and shop time you're better off buying something like these at Harbour Freight,  :(

My main vise is mounted on a free standing (approx. 5inch) steel pipe stand, with one of these same support gizmos mounted on the stand.  The only difference is that I replaced one of the rollers with leather padded piece of 2x2 and covered the other roller with a piece bicycle innertube.  I used a free standing, adjustable work support with the vise for years, but I seldom use it now that I have this contraption.

Works pretty darn good...

After struggling with some one handed hole drilling I bough an adjustable support table at Home Depot to use with my drill press. With the cross slide vise and the support table, hole drilling is a lot easier and more precise.

Necessity being the mother of invention, I devised this system for supporting work for drilling in the drill press, and for work along the bench.  That's LB's Beck rifle in the vise.
