Another Rifle to ID it is marked "J. G. 171"

We had this rifle on ALR 6 or 7 years ago (wow where does time go) and Dr. James Whisker id'ed it as a J. Gibbins rifle (see this link http://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=12402.0 ) then there was another J G rifle that someone has since removed the photos that was id'ed as a Jacob Yeager rifle (signed J Y not J G).

Does anyone have more information of either J. Gibbins or Jacob Yeager or any other thoughts on who made this rifle. Maybe the owner will chime in later.

The barrel measures 7/8ths across the flats and is just shy of 40 inches long.

Hi Dennis

From Lee Good's Sighting In, MB Oct 1980:

     "Joseph Gibbins is mentioned in two listings, both located in Brownsvile Pa 1856-1870.
       He was noted for his fine half-stock rifles with high quality engraving. Apparently Gibbins
       is also spelled Gibbons sometimes."

Thanks for the info. Brownsville is south east of Pittsburg PA and not far from the Ohio state line so my guess wasn't too far off.

Sure would like to see a few photos of his rifles so we could see how they compare to this one.

Doesn't anyone have an example of a signed Gibbins so we can compare signatures?
