Title: Full Stock Hawken Build
Post by: sean30ber on March 05, 2014, 09:59:31 PM
I spend so much time on the Muzzleloading Forum I forget to come over here. I know a lot of you guys are over there. I'm in the middle of my third gun build and would like any opinion from the Hawken Gurus. Suggestions, issues comments, pics of original. Anything would help as I complete this rifle. Instead of posting the whole thing here, as its long and picture heavy, Ill put a link and if you have time to look it over I would appreciate it. I started with a Don Stith parts set, but went conversion drum instead of flint. Thanks again Sean

Totally messed up the lock plate. Had to order a new one. Dont file by eyeballing things. I did this early on in the build.

(https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi932.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fad170%2Fsean30ber%2FIMAG0449.jpg&hash=c289720ee941f5f8cf6a8a2c0dda0c90b14bdd5e) (http://s932.photobucket.com/user/sean30ber/media/IMAG0449.jpg.html)

I went with the drum as I can switch to flint using the drop in Late English Flint Lock if I ever so decide.  I know they are not common but the Smithsonian Hawken is a Drum conversion so it was done.

Your work so far looks just fine, with one exception, if I may.  The lock plate is supposed to support the drum - gives it a base to absorb the energy of the hammer striking the nipple.  If it were mine, I'd file the drum inlet into a rectangle and inlet (silversolder or weld) a block of steel into the recess, and recut the drum notch.  You could even get creative and make the filler to resemble a filed over pan from a flintlock, and \then cut the 1/2" notch for the drum.

Your metal to wood inlets look very good.  It's going to be a nice rifle.

I wonder what went sideways with the first piece of wood?  Internal stresses releasing themselves after spindle carving??

Yes sir. I pulled a dummy and eyeballed it, then filed. Thinking I would have to take more off. Well, that didn't work. Ordered a new plate. I'll fix this one at a later date.

Thanks for the comment, means a lot. I've seen your work.

It's a DeHaas 36 inch. .54,  1 inch tapered to 7/8. I got to tell ya I pushed a patched round ball through it and I've never felt such a smooth consistent bore. I patched it tight and it went through like butter and didn't cut the patch at all. Can't wait to fire it.

I would  point out that the Smithsonian rifle is thought to date to the late 1840s or maybe 1850s. So while it was originally built as a FL it was built after Jake's death. The conversion is not representative of the Hawken Shop work so while it was "done",  it was done sloppily being what I (and W. Greener) would call a "blacksmith" conversion.

Why Did you use Two lock bolts ?????
Title: Re: Full Stock Hawken Build
Post by: sean30ber on March 11, 2014, 10:52:07 PM
Its a conversion, I used the L&R 300 cap lock and have the 900D late English flintlock that is a drop in fit with the pan in the correct position for the liner that screws in the drum hole. I set both locks up at the beginning and all I have to do is switch out if, and when, I decide to go back to flint without ever messing up the finish later. I know its not correct but I don't have to build two guns. Its an idea I got from James Turpin, watching his gun building videos.

Nice work!
You inletting is spot on. Broken tap, eh?? No tapping fluid? Been there, use lard if nothing else.
One serious critique.......there has to be something real wrong with such  clean and orderly work bench.
Please show us more of the gun....not the bench.....the wife might see the pictures.

Saw is a Craftsman. Cheap and the best most used craft saw I have. Stupid thing.  Thanks for the comments. Question for builders, I put the drum together using a Drum jig and the head of the cock is setting just a tad to far forward. Is it ok to heat the cock neck up red hot and bend the chin back to a more eye pleasing alignment.

Your photo is not exactly a close-up shot, but from what I can see, the hammer cup is centred over the nipple.  It may be that the inside of the cup, the hammer face itself, is striking the rear edge of the nipple.  That is not good.

I made a cutter from a drill bit that has a flat end and a very slight taper, to re-cut this face, so that the hammer strikes square onto the nipple.  I clamp the hammer in the drill press vise, with the spur supported on the table, at an attitude so that I mill away a little of the cup's base and thus change that angle just slightly.  I'll see if I can find a photo of this process.

Ain't gun building fun?

(https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi3.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy58%2FDTaylorSapergia%2FTaylorMadeGuns%2FHawken%2F100B3900_zps1c80f0fe.jpg&hash=2e3ef9096098e93c4447078934876720e0193f06) (http://s3.photobucket.com/user/DTaylorSapergia/media/TaylorMadeGuns/Hawken/100B3900_zps1c80f0fe.jpg.html)

This picture is not of the actual drilling, but it shows the hammer having been remedied.  Remember the drill bit is ground to cut a gentle taper so that the thinnest part is at the mouth, and it gets thicker as the hole deepens.

Gents on the MLForum are trying to help with this but im stumped. If I cock the lock, set the trigger and fire the front, it hangs up on the half cock setting and stops. If I just fire the front trigger without setting the rear its fine. It appears that the fly is in correctly but I switched it just to check and it locks up either way. The lock seems to work fine with it out of the gun.  I have no experience with issues from locks as I always put them back together correctly. I blacked everything to see if there was any wood to metal contact that might be taking place in the inlet and there is none. Im stumped. Any suggestions?

Here is how its put together.

From the looks of the fly and its poor fit to the pin it's on,I'd say
the fly is actually camming sideways toward the bridle and allowing
the sear to drop into half cock. The front trigger only being used is
like any other single trigger and an involuntary reflex will create
enough over travel to let the sear clear the half cock position.
Another possibility is that the fly is staying back when the hammer is drawn to full cock.
Not likely but possible. Also see if there is excess tension from the sear spring.

To my eye it looks lihe the the sear nose is too narrow to engage the fly. Tumbler also looks to not being set deep enough against the plate. Check to make sure the lock plate is not bent.
Thats all I got,.

I agree it looks as if the timber is not seated into the lock plate fully.

Another thing I just realized, this is a replacement plate. I didnt realy check it before hand. The bridle screws are not seating all the way, like the holes are not taped all the way through. This is allowing the tumbler to cam over just a touch in its hole. I put the parts back in the old plate and it sits tight. The gap between the tumbler and the plate is it camming over under spring preasure as its not being pressed flat by the bridle. Im going to get a 6-40 tap and reem the holes all the way through, see if it helps.

Could be the threads on the bridle screws are a bit short and is preventing you from anchoring
 the tumbler???

I sent an e-mail to Tim at L&R with the pics and he told me to send it back and they would fix her up. Went out in the mail today. Now I get to set and twiddle my thumbs.

Sean, had forgot you replaced the plate on this - so is it possible you didn't get all the holes threaded all the way through with the replacement plate? (was it "as cast"? which would have required some work)

That could cause all sorts of bad things to happen...

So it sounds like the guy replaced the lock plate,,, neglected to screw the lock screws all the way down,,,, and that somehow makes the problem L&R's fault?????

Now that's some screwy thinking!  :o

What I saw in the photographs, is the outside face of the sear had been ground away - not filed - but ground away, and on an angle.  That removed the metal that would have contacted the fly, and kicked it down to protect the half cock notch.  That in my experience is not how L & R sends out their locks.
If L & R does 'fix' the lock, I'd be pretty impressed with their service department, as I don't see it as their fault at all.  I hope we hear how it all ends up.

Other than the plate being replaced with one of their replacement plated. All the parts are factory. I just swapped them to the new plate. No filling, no grinding, No nothing. Well see. Ill let you know when I hear from them. Ive never built or really delved into the lock portion of building yet, so I dont know much about them. I suppose I should try to build one sometime to educate myself on the fittings.

Based on the photos, the lock looks to me not to be very well put together.  The tumbler appears to be on an angle and there seems to be lots of slop between it and the bridle.  This doesn't help your issue.  Also the front of the sear is angled downward a bit as Taylor pointed out.  In fact, almost everything shown looks crooked!  Not what I would consider to be decent quality work, even for an off-the-shelf lock at the price point they are being sold at.

I zoomed in on the sear and it was bent in the wax phase of its fabrication. You can clearly see that the width the sear is exactly the width of the tumbler but it is cocked off due to a couple degrees of bend. I you were to tighten down the sear screw the nose and the rear of the sear bar would lock it down to the plate  so it couldne move at all.  Nothing but replacing the sear with a new one that is not bent and your in business.

JTR. I dont think anyone said it was L&Rs fault. I emailed Tim with some photos and he said he could fix it for me. If it cost a few bucks thats fine. I did replace the plate. But the other parts are as came from the factory. Tim was nice enough to fix it for me even though I swapped plates. Im waiting to hear from him as to what all needs to be done. He was very helpful with our brief exchange. I have never had an issue with L&R and dont want anyone thinking im dogging on them. Ill use thier locks anytime. Hope this whole thing didnt make me sound like I was dogging them. I dont know the first thing about locks. Thats why I posted, to see what others thought.

Just some pics of the progress. Waiting for the lock to come back so I have been shaping and thinning. Don't mind the lock plate in the pics, its just there for visual.  Wish the lock panels weren't so curved in the pre-carving but she'll look nice when done.

I would like to make a constructive criticism of your lock panel layout.  First, reduce the wood and metal along the centre line of the barrel right back to and include the lock plate to the drum.  The rest is self explained in the image I have presented.  It is only a suggestion, but it's based upon study of original rifles, and is only my interpretation.

Here's what you have now...

(https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi3.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy58%2FDTaylorSapergia%2FScreenshot2014-03-23at114435AM_zpscf40ebc4.png&hash=cb21e0e00d336f49520cacdb4bdeae78e4cbe86b) (http://s3.photobucket.com/user/DTaylorSapergia/media/Screenshot2014-03-23at114435AM_zpscf40ebc4.png.html)

...and here is my suggestion.

(https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi3.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy58%2FDTaylorSapergia%2Flockpanel_zpsaff8387f.jpg&hash=b4deb964c47e3b1661de3b4a8c587d979f778b6d) (http://s3.photobucket.com/user/DTaylorSapergia/media/lockpanel_zpsaff8387f.jpg.html)

My lines are drawn inside the parameters of the existing panel.  They got a little fat along the bottom edge of the front of the plate, but you should get the idea.

100 % better!!  Once you have the lock in, file the forward part of the plate's bolster so that it lies no more than along the centre line of the bore - a little below is fine too.  Then the wood can be cut down too, to straighten out that line, and to reduce the amount of wood in the forearm which will help to avoid that slab sided effect.  Remember, the forearm is not flat along its vertical plane, but gently rounded or ovoid in section.  T/C missed that little point by a country mile, and a lot of contemporary builders, whose experience with muzzle loaders is limited to that kind of 'replica', recreate the mistake on their builds.
Your rifle is coming along famously.

Started playing with the rust blue. Let the parts set overnight in a closed container with water in the bottom, and boiled in distilled water. Still need to so several more coats. The sooty black stuff get everywhere and doesn't wash off hands very well. Can you say latex gloves. Interesting new finish for me. I already like it. Sheet metal doesn't take as fast as cast parts it seems.

Finished with the Rust Bluing on these pieces. I coated with LMF brown, and sweat tanked it, coated again without carding and let it tank for about 8 hours. Boiled in distilled water, coated again and tanked it for about 8 hours then boiled again. Coated and let it set over night then boiled again in distilled water, rubbed it back then boiled in distilled water again with baking soda. Flashed it and coated in oil. I like the color and the rough texture that I got from not carding and letting it rust out. Gives it a nice mat finish. Here she is sitting with a good coat of oil. Ill let it set for a day coated then rub the oil back.

Here are pics of where Im at. Any comments or suggestions before I do the final shaping and finish sanding would be appreciated. The balance point is almost center between the rear pipe and the rear key. I notices on some original pics that the edges of the panels are rounded over, especially on the top edge along the barrel and breech. Instead of having crisp lines and angles. I know that from this point, final shaping and easing will play a huge role in the final look so I want to get it as eye appealing as possible. Thanks guys.  It now sits at 8lb 10 oz

Its funny. Looking at the pics I already see thing I didnt with the naked eye.

Did something a bit different from what I normally do. I went with a second blush coat, darkened way up, then wet brillo rubbed it. You can see the color really well and rub it back a to taste. When it dried there was no curl visible. Then I hit it with the first coat of BLO. NICE!!!!!!

Sorry for the bad pics. My camera wouldnt focus for some reason. Its night and bad light.

Second coat BLO, and a day in the sun. My other ones darkened up a bit when I let them cure in the sun. Even after neutralizing. Well see. I typically like a darker gun but this is pretty. These pics are more for new builders that havent done this so they can see what she looks like through the steps. The wood is starting to take on that 3D glow now.  I also painted all the in-lets with Spar Varnish for waterproofing.

Well Im rusting parts and boiling and rubbing BLO. Here is a pic of the small parts. The trigger, Guard, plate and hammer were boiled once. Not sure what happened with the plate. All the black carded off it. I prepped it the same as the others. Might just take an extra coat or two, Not worried, the butt plate looked like $#*! the first coat or two also but came out beautifully. The sight has only been rusting for an hour.

Never admit that you are stunned - you will certainly get agreement from someone!  Wonderful job on the rust blue.  How many applications of brown before boiling?  How did you boil it?  And for how long?

I sanded it way down and then ruffed it back up with 150 grit. One light coat, steamed in the bathroom for 6 hours. Then re-applied another coat without carding and let it set for @12 hours. What it came out to was the rust color in the picture. I took a 2 1/2 inch PVC 2 inches longer than the barrel and caped on end.  Plugged the barrel and nipple hole. Put the barrel in the tube and carefully poured in @1.5 gallons of boiling , distilled water. Covered the top with a hot glove and let it sit for an hour or so and cool. Took it out, carded it with a damp, blue cotton surgical towel. Hit it with a paint heat gun to dry. I liked the color so much I didn't do a second coat. I then saturated it with "The Italian" gun oil. So I actually didn't boil the barrel. It just sat in boiling hot water and cooled down with it.

With the sight put back on

Well, here she is. Still have some finish coats to put on but that's all loving, rubbing stuff. I decided to take some burlap and oil and rub the blue back just a hair. I know a lot of guys hate aging but I didn't want a queen. Wanted it to look like my Grandfather used it for hunting and lovingly took care of it before handing it down. Already got a scratch in the stock on the for arm. Had it leaning up against the bench and daughter came flying in on her skateboard. Well needless to say it slid down the bench before I caught it. At least I caught it. It has a few builder flaws here and there which are obvious but Im getting better with each build. The stock really darkened up like I hoped it would. Im going to try something different and used Howard's lemon oil and bees wax combo for the final few rub downs and future care. I've heard a lot of good thing about it. Still waiting on the ramrod tip to come in.

HERE SHE IS, SORRY BAD PICS, CAMERA IS DYING.
