Title: ALR Meeting at Ft. Boonesborough - Pictures
Post by: Ky-Flinter on December 13, 2014, 04:59:24 AM
NOTICE: Fort management has requested we move our meeting date to January 24.

2015 would have been our 6th annual "Gathering” at Ft. Boonesborough, but the weather and electrical problems at the Fort last winter prevented our meeting.  But, we are all set for this year, so mark your calendar!

The management at Ft. Boonesborough State Park has agreed to let us use the Blockhouse again this year for an ALR get-together.  We will be meeting on Saturday, January 31 24 , from 9am to 4pm, with a break for lunch, probably at Hall's on the River.

All ALR members and anyone that's interested in the study, building, shooting, etc. of long rifles, horns, bags, knives, etc. is welcome.  Please bring works in progress, recently completed pieces, items for sale or trade.  There is no admission fee, but we will accept donations to the Ft. Boonesborough Foundation.

In past years we've had from 10 to 15 attendees, but we can accommodate more, and we always have a great time, so please come and join us.  We usually try to have some tutorials lined up, so if anyone has any tips or how-to's they would be willing to pass along, please let me know.

I'd like to get a rough head count, so I can let the Fort know how many tables and chairs we need, so please let me know if you think you will be attending.

I'll be looking forward to seeing y'all again.

-Ron

Sorry to hear that Jeff.  Maybe you can negotiate a swap with someone?  I wanted to see that Woodbury gun you're working on.  Is it finished yet?

Hope you can make it.  At least it's not the same weekend as the Linton Fair this year!

It sure will be great to see everyone, new friends and old long-time friends.

Wayne,
We could definitely do a rasp "shoot-out".  I have a set of the US Nicholson 49 and 50, and also a flat and round MicroPlane that I just got and haven't used yet.  So, everyone bring your favorite rasp and we'll all try them out!

Bill,
Thanks for the offer, but no help needed.  It's just a small, laid back affair.  What makes it cool is the stuff people bring for show and tell.  The Fort manager will have tables and chairs set up for us.

The Fort is a few miles off I-75 between Lexington and Richmond, but there's no lodging right at the fort.  Coming up I-75 from the south, Richmond has several motels.  And Lexington has a bunch too.  Richmond is about 12 miles south of the Fort.  Southeast Lexington is about 16 miles north of the fort.

Hi All,

I hope the date change is not an inconvenience and everyone can still attend.

A couple of fellows who haven't attended our annual get-together have asked what's to be expected.  It's a little different each year, as it depends on who attends and what they bring with them, but here's my take on it.  Others are welcome to chime in.

This is a very informal affair.  I like to call it a get-together, rather than a “Meeting”.  Meeting just sounds so formal.  The attendees are mostly members here on ALR, but that’s not required.  Anyone that’s interested in long rifles and such is welcome.  There is no admission fee, but we will accept donations to the Ft. Boonesborough Foundation.

Some years ago, a couple of friends and I made the pilgrimage to Dixon’s Fair.  On the long trip home, we were talking about all we had seen and done.  And one of the highlights for each of us was the gathering each evening of like-minded fellows around the picnic table behind the motel where we stayed.  We decided we should do something similar, but closer to home, and that’s how this get-together came about.

Our gathering is just an opportunity to meet other ALR members from the area and see and discuss what they are working on, share ideas, get opinions, learn a new skill, etc.  I always ask attendees to bring something to show.  Could be a gun, horn or bag project in progress, recently completed pieces, a demonstration of a technique, tool or skill.  Items for sale or trade are welcome too.  Occasionally, members have brought antique guns, which is always a treat.

There are usually 10 to 15 fellows that attend.  Wives and kids are welcome, but may get bored, as there's not much else to do but look at long rifles and related things.  I will be there by 9:00am and our host will probably have coffee made and a nice fire going in the fireplace by then.  Members will begin to trickle in.  Old friends are greeted and new friends are met.  Around noon, we will lock up the blockhouse and drive to an area restaurant for lunch, and afterwards return to the fort for the afternoon.

Hope you can make it.  I look forward to meeting you.

-Ron

Sure.  The attendees are mostly members here on ALR because that's how we spread the word, but anyone that's interested in building, study, collecting, etc. of long rifles and related items is welcome.  If you can, bring something you are working on, something to show, discuss, etc.  That's what makes this gathering click.

Hope to see you there.

I'm going to try to make it. Jan is working out to be a busy/expensive month for me. Frau Hessian has a trip planned for us the weekend prior and you know the old saying(Happy wife, happy life!) As of now I'll go with a tenative yes but I don't know if I'll be up for another long drive. Perhaps if a couple of us get together and drive up from ETn. Most of my buddies will just be getting back from the 1812 thing in New Orleans though. We'll see . . .

Yank me offa the "maybe" list.  Truck repairs set me back a bit more than expected and that was compounded by 2 weeks off work.  Gotta build up some more emergency monies before travel/play monies.

and right now my money tree looks like I bought it from Charlie Brown.  ::)

Keb, Arizona does sound good, but we'll have a good fire in the fireplace and be warm in the Blockhouse.

If things change and you can come, then come on.  Pre-registration is not required.  I just like to have a rough idea of how many to plan for.  The more the merrier.

I'm 50 miles East of Nashville, 100 miles West of Chattanooga.  Twenty miles either: South of I40 at Smithville or North of I24 at Manchester.

Right close to NoWhereInPartikkalar.  Shotgun County, (Cannon), Woodbury--the other one (100 miles from _the_ Woodbury of Contemporary fame and good Folks).

I assume the meeting is still on for this Saturday? Would any one be interested in some red maple blanks? I have some from a tree I had sawn 3 years ago. Most has figure, some of it has  worm holes and spalting. I could bring a few if anyone is interested. I just ran a few through the planer and some are pretty interesting.

Sounds good B.  The more the merrier.  That snow isn't going to amount to anything.  Forecast calls for 1/2" or less and it's been pretty warm lately, so it shouldn't stick on the roads.  Supposed to be in the mid 40's tomorrow!  no worries.

Well, the weatherman missed his guess again.  We got about 4" of snow last night.  The streets in my neighborhood are slushy.  Main roads and interstate shouldn't be too bad, road crews have been out plowing and spreading salt.  The snow has stopped and the forecast is for a high in the low 40's, so road conditions will improve during the day.

Heading for Boonesborough now.  Be careful on your trip and I'll see you at the Fort.

I'm at the Fort!  I-75 between Lexington and Boonesborough is clear and traffic is moving at normal speeds.  Ky 627 from I-75 to the Fort is clear, just wet,  traffic is moving at normal speeds.  Be careful at the Fort entrance, it is snow covered but no problem if you go slow.  If you leave now, you can be here before lunch!  Come on!

I think the consensus was the boys liked your Iwasaki.  It moves a lot of wood without a great deal of effort and left a fairly smooth surface.

An unexpected treat:  A fellow and his wife brought this horn to the Fort today, to see if the Fort would accept it as a donation.  The man’s father had found the horn when he was about 15 years old, in the woods that later would be part of Fort Boonesborough State Park.  The horn is fairly small but has a lot of twist, about 8” long and the mouth about 2 by 2-1/2”.  One side of the horn was worn thru from extended use.  We were just lucky to happen to be at the Fort when the couple came in with the horn and they allowed us to photograph it.

I had a great time at the fort today.
Met lots of guys and conversation ranged over hundreds of different topics.
The original little powder horn was a special treat.
The alligator bag was really cool.
I just might have to spend some time on the internet and try and round up
an alligator hide someplace.

There is no such thing as a "free" lunch

I think you got some bad information. What he doesn't know is the interest clock is ticking, and that was not priced like a Happy Meal at Mickey D's.

I heard Jeff say that the half order hot brown wasn't available anymore on the menu. Oh well,Charlie's buying so I'll have the large hot brown ;) ;D Had a great time and even though the only pic I was in was fuzzy I guess I'll give a little latitude to the photographer due to being a little rusty after a 2 year sabbatical :D Again a great day seeing friends and meeting a new one from Canada. Thanks Ron for all you and the good folks from the fort do.

Enjoyed seeing old friends and meeting new ones. Thanks Ron for your
organizing.

The highlight of the day for me was listening to Ian discuss the various
influences that shaped his thoughts in building his marvelous rifle. Wish
I had brought a tape recorder.

All the best
Paul

Paul,
I'll second that thought.
It was nice having Ian & Maryellen, bringing two great rifles, that gator bag, and those neat little original triggers.  All prompting some interesting discussion, along with a fair amount of gawking.  ;D

Sorry I missed it. I just couldn't drag my butt outta bed early enough to make that long drive. I had a blacksmith friend that was going to come with me but he is just recovering from the flu.(missed the last 3 days of work) I am looking forward to the Norris Show. It's a little more "doable" for us folks in ETn. Glad you guys had a good time.

I came very close to turning around and going back home once I saw the road conditions. It is normally about two and a half hour drive for me but I made it and was glad I did. Once again I am inspired to try and improve my skills. Seems like the mark just keeps getting higher. Ian's stuff and the relic horn were a real treat. The insight on the original Honaker triggers was valuable to me as I have thought about building a rifle in their style.
Enjoyed, thanks to all.

Here is my interpretation of the original relic horn we saw at the fort that day. Will make a good "day" or hunting horn.
