Lovely looking firearm, Runar! I do like the looks of the lock on the one pictured on the Norwegian page.
I need to borrow your router, bit, and setup for a rifle or two I have in progress!

That's really an interesting gun. Thanks for the photos. I always enjoy learning how other people inlet barrels. I've always used a milling machine, but no longer have access to one.
-
Well, Not English, now you are going to have to use hammer and chisel. I'm trying to do that now, on a super-hard gnarly piece of black walnut. Wearing me down!
I am hoping that Runar comes to visit me, toting his router and jig.
BTW - I hang out with a lot of Amish, and constantly have to say "Not English! American!" Anyone not of the faith is English to them.

Being fairly new, you aren't as used to Runar's "builds" as much as the rest of us happen to be, Dave.

Runar: After you finish these great builds, where do the finished pieces go and do they ever get shot?
-
Hi all and thank you guys! Metalshaper, first I cut half true the V then heat and bend to right angle then weld ;) EC121, I build for my own guncolletion and testshoot the build. The lock is now done, ecsept some hardening. See the water drain on the frizzen pan, special on this model.

Aside from your incredible craftsmanship and ingenuity, I love seeing your posts because they are generally Scandinavian arms that we don't get to see very often.
Slightly off-topic, but I wanted Runastav's input, are there any good books available in English on Scandinavian muzzle loading firearms and accoutrements? I've found things online in the past through museums and what not, sometimes requiring translation, but I haven't seen a good text on the subject.
Short version of my particular reasons for interest: I'm of Scandinavian heritage and grew up in a small village in Illinois that was settled largely as a Swedish colony. My childhood home that my parents still live in was the second Swedish parsonage for that community and is directly next door to a historic chapel and graveyard partially filled with the immigrants the perished in a cholera epidemic in the mid-19th century. Growing up, we sung hymns in Swedish for special holidays, had visits from the king and queen of Sweden, and hosted a traveling choir from Sweden, so I've kind of had a lifelong interest in my Scandinavian roots.
-
An observation, Runar, and I know it isn't finished, but appears to me, the frizzen didn't need the welded on extension on top, judging by the geometry of the cock.
It looks "long" to me, but perhaps that is how the original flintlocks were built.
-
Seth I, thank you ! My buddy Øyvind Flatnes have a very good blackpowder forum. https://svartkrutt.net/ and you can wrigth english plenty folks who is a LOT more in english then me!
Daryl, vell the frizzen is made from the drawing my buddy Svein made from one of the 3 original m/1821 flintlock who is known the rest was percusjoned :(The frizzen is long and 20mm wide

Fascinating process! The last photo from Dec 4 shows a stock with what appear to be red rubber bands. What is the purpose of that?
-
Thank you LilysDad! The red strips is tape, use for compare the contur of the original over to the replika you see!

Runar - quite positively marvelous, all of it. ;D
-
Runar, as previously posted, Fascinating! Your last photo shows the bayonet attachment. My question is how strong is the actual bayonet attachment to the barrel? The barrel attachment looks plenty strong, but i wonder about the actual hand guard attachment strikes me as less than ideal. The bayonet shown earlier looks like a hunting sword. Is the leverage a problem?
Dave
-
Hi all! and thank you Daryl and Not English! Yes the bayonet attachment is wery strong, the old guys was very good on Brazing! And yes the bajonett is made from M/1788-1793 sword(Hirsjfenger bajonett) and the blade is ca 24" long ;) So its the sliding wood pathbox.

Runar, I notice there is a notch or groove in the front of the ramrod. What is it's purpose?
Thanks,Dave

Runar, I notice there is a notch or groove in the front of the ramrod. What is it's purpose?
Thanks,Dave
I would guess that is to secure a patch for cleaning.
-
I would think so, through the notch and down over the knob. However, that would tend to push fouling down the bore to the breach, but not pull it back out
without a corresponding sharp ring around the end of the rod's tip to hold the patch.
-
Hi Guys and thank you! Think Daryl is nearest. In the patch box there was a bullet mould and it was a combination tool. the hole was used if drawing a stuck bullet etc.

Exceptional tutorial on a very interesting gun that few over here ever heard of.
The lock work is outstanding and I say this from my own personal experiences
over a long period of time. The labor intensive nature of this project makes a lot of us tired
just to think about it and we think you have certainly earned a place among our own
gunmakers and restorers.
