Title: Re-bore .40 to .45
Post by: hanshi on April 06, 2021, 08:12:56 PM
For nearly 20 years I've had a nice flintlock longrifle in .40 but haven't used it as much as I'd like.  It's accurate but doesn't fill an actual niche .  The 38" "B" wgt GM barrel sustained some bore damage several years ago resulting in pitting.  I know I'd shoot it more if it were a .45; It is delightful to handle.

I've read great things about Bobby Hoyt though I'm sure there are others.  I'm looking for any recommendations/opinions on the re-bore to .45.  Any "ball park" idea of the kind of cost I'm looking at?

I would be more inclined to rebarrel it. That way you could always go back to the way it was if desired.

I’m guessing with 2-way shipping you’re looking at maybe $175 to get it re-bored. That’s cheaper than a new swamped barrel, plus the work and barrel fixings. I’ve got a gun with 3 barrels. Mostly use just one of them.

Bobby Hoyt is the guy to have do it.  I have had him do several.  Been a few years but will be around $150 plus or minus including shipping.  I really stating prices so you really need to talk to him.  Good luck.

Thanks all for the information.  If I can manage to scrape a little $$ together I'll go for a re-bore.

Hanshi,
Bobby is the best.  I’ve had 3 barrels bored, and 2 of them re rifled from him. Excellent work,  very reasonably priced. The smooth bore was $60, the re bored and rifled $120. Plus shipping of course.

I have one barrel that Bobby re-bored for me and I didn't even need to file the sights. I have seen a few others that kept the same point of impact after the re-bore. I highly recommend Bobby Hoyt, you will not be sorry if you choose that course of action.

I called Bob Hoyt and left a message.  If I don't hear from him by tomorrow I try again.  Already removed the barrel for shipping.

I second this one, Bobby has done a few rebores and liners for me. The last one he rebored for me was a colerain 40 cal. to a 50 cal and the sights needed no adjustments at all!! And a great guy to deal with.

Bobby Hoyt is on this forum. Search for R.A. Hoyt. He might answer a P.M.

Well, I've got the barrel about ready to ship to Bobby Hoyt.  Any suggestions on the least expensive and most reasonable way to ship?  His prices are very reasonable; and even with shipping it's around half what a new barrel alone would cost.

I always deliver and pick mine up being in PA but I assure you, you cant go wrong with his re-rifling.  He's done several for me and friends and they all shoot to the same point of impact as they were before he re-rifled.  Good guy to boot!

Remove breech and send in a beefy cardboard tube.  Is about $20 to ship.   If you can’t find one similar at UPS, online, (etc), Bobby may be able to send you an empty tube, as I’m sure he uses them.

I’ve used pvc pipe with one cap glued on and the other end taped up, weighs a little more but never had a barrel damaged that way, stuff with paper or foam.

I have three Numrich NOS 45 cal barrels.  Each has a ring from leaving a patch in the bore.  They could be re rifled to 50 cal.  Since they are only 32" I'd do a couple as fast twist pistol barrels.

How much does Mr. Hoyt normally charge to ream and rifle a barrel?

I already have it in a heavy cardboard tube that something had been shipped in long ago.  Didn't even think about removing the breech plug, I'll take the barrel out and do that tomorrow.
