Easy Scraper
« on: August 09, 2010, 12:11:47 AM »
I've been playing around with scrapers made from various material. Almost anything that is thin steel will work to some degree. About the quickest and easy to make scraper came about while painting in the house yesterday. Along with paint I was given a couple of paint can openers of 2 sizes. I made a scraper out of each, one about 1/4" wide and the othert 1/2". I just quickly touched the outside bend to a belt grinder and when it was sharp I pressed along the sharpened edge with a scredriver shaft. It folded over perfectly and works like a charm for small area scraping like around carving. The triangular handle is comfortable and the curve to the sharpened edge is perfect. Don't know how long it will hold an edge but is really simple.  Danny

I think that will post the photos. The first one should show the 2 sizes and the second should be the tips. If you sharpen along the outside curve then fold over the edge it works like a charm and is very comfortable to hold. Danny

I'll add this to my list of scraper candidates. Whatever is at hand seems to work pretty well.  I often use saber saw or similar blades and grind or file them to the shape I want.  Generally I like blades like this for ramrod channels when clamped in a handle that helps to control depth.  I use a mill file to sharpen various scrapers when they need it, including my cabinet scrapers.  By the way, I really like Dr Tim's new photo.  Now we can see what he really looks like.  He still likes that hat but he doesn't look anything like that drawing he used to use.

Carpet installer razor blades.  Make one edge 'safe' and beware the end edge of the blades...roll a burr on the edge.
