Henry Carlisle, Shippensburg Pa. Shot in competition in Friendship up until 1980, the grease patches are still in the patch box. There has been restoration to the stock at the rear ramrod pipe to the muzzle. It is a 40 calibre, rilfe. There are 10 silver in lays, and it is incised carved at the wrist and to the rear of the cheek rest. The barrel is signed H Carlisle.

Unless the owner is mistaken or I've mistaken his meaning this is an antique rifle. My understanding is that it enjoyed a long career into the 1980's.

Nice, typical Henry Carlisle rifle, but I always cringe when I hear of originals being shot repeatedly. No matter how careful the owner is, the rifle is slowly degraded when used extensively. Shelby Gallien

No need to apologize... Let's just say that if old Henry shot the rifle in 1980 he set a lot of records.

The rifle was made somewhere in the vicinity of 1830 - 1840, The gentleman that I purchased it from stated that he purchased it from a gentleman who had shot this rifle in competition up until 1980-81. Whether that is fact or fiction I do not know. The rifle was restocked from the rear ramrod pipe to the muzzle with all of the original hardware (escutcheons and pipes) reinstalled.
Everything else is original to the piece. Its 40 calibre, barrel length is 43.5", Pull is 13", and the width flat to flat is 1".

Carlile, Henry ( -1847). gunsmith. 1818-47, Shippensburg, Cumberland County. In 1818 Carlile married Catharine Cobaugh who died in 1823. In 1825 he remarried, to Nancy Griffen. The best + by far most accurate + complete source was William S Bowers, Gunsmiths of Pen-Mar-Va, pp. 52-54.
