THanks for the compliments guys. That trigger guard is indeed from the brass barreled rifle. I've gotten mine from Brad Emig but they seem to be a one at a time thing using the traditional method making them hard to get and expensive.
Actual early VA rifles look for the most part like Lancaster rifles with variation.
For stain, I almost always use LMF Lancaster Brown which duplicates an aqua fortis stain. My best efforts with aqua fortis seem to look the same with the caveat that each piece of wood works differently. IMHO aqua fortis brings out figure better in sugar maple. Aniline dyes better in red.
