50 years of the KRA
« on: April 21, 2012, 08:17:15 PM »
Today I received my copy of the KRA Bulletin..It was discussing the 50 year anniversary of the organization . They were discussing the upcoming meeting and all that was to take place. Then ask the Question       " I wonder what would George Hyatt and his friends would say?"  When I think about this question, I doubt they had any idea what they were creating and how that organization would grow from that first meeting in Bedford Pa.. Some of you may have attended that first meeting or know someone who did . I had a very good friend, George megall, who was there . The stories that he told leads me to believe that on thing Mr. Hyatt would say is, Man I sold that rifle cheap ! To give you an example of the prices then, go to the KRA book A True American Heritage in Picture ..On page 14 there is a wonderful JP Beck rifle.. My friend George Megall carried that rifle from Chicago to Bedford in 62.. To make a long story short, finally Carl Pippert attempted to buy the rifle..Which he did for $ 1100. Don't  you wish  you  had been  there with a few hundred dollars ?.....Louie

In 1962 I was working for $1.25 an hour trying to pay for a 57 Ford Fairlane...There would have been no room for a $1,100. J.P. Beck in that budget.  A used 94 Winchester was going for $35.-$45.  I'd have a better chance of affording them now....

Yeah, no $1100 Becks for me either back then.
While I had already been infected with Longrifle fever, at that point I was more interested in discovering the differences between us guys and the gals! ;D

So who's going to the 50 aniversary meeting this year?
I'm looking forward to going, for the first time.

This years show will be like a regular KRA show on steroids!  Glad you'll be coming this year John, you picked a good one for your first show, I haven't missed a show in 22 years, they are all great for me.  look me up when you get there, I'll have a table.

If nothing happens to prevent me from going I plan to be there.

Prices have changed in the past 50 years but our wants & desires haven't.  Becks & carved rifles have always been expensive & to few to go around.    Thank goodness wages have gone up but the prices of these have got out of control. Wish I had the money I got now back then, we could have cleaned up Louie!  We just got back from the Tenn. show & it was well attended & lots of great stuff to see. Looking forward to the KRA.
