Chad's Lyman GPR Flint Build...
« on: November 11, 2012, 08:18:31 PM »
So I am starting this thread to post my progress. The box is in front of me. Everything looks great. No cracks or problems as far as I can see. I also have a R.E. Davis trigger on the way. My plan is to go slow and make sure I pay attention to each step. So any advice, comments or insight is appreciated.

Before I dive in. What tools should I have on hand? I have several grades of sandpaper. I have some small woodworking files. Xacto knife. What would I need to draw files the wording off the barrel? Any threads about draw filing and how to do it?

Here are some Intro pics... I want to make sure I have a good record of events...

Chad,
Welcome to ALR. Here is a thread on drawfiling:

Good luck, it takes some filing to get rid of those letters.

Chad:

If you use the Search function and query 'Remove lettering' there are posts that will assist you in removing the wording from the barrel.

Best,
John.

Welcome and look around-there's a t-double-ton of information on here.  Take your time and don't over think it.  There will be mistakes.  Dealing with the mistakes is the real learning process.

As i unnerstand it (having not used a pre-carve and yet to finish the job atall), you'll need to be ready to open up most of the pre-cut holes in the stock to actually fit the parts.  For such, and in don 't see 'em in your list you'll need gouges and chisels-kept razor sharp.

A very handy skill to learn is making your own chisel/gouge/scraper from bits of metal-usually a bit  of hacksaw blade or worn-out files.  There's a whole section on making tools here.

oh and fix the end of the box there with this handy redaction--OR PYRODEX.
