Shooting in Montana

I'm moving to Troy Montana, And does anyone know where to look for shoots in this area? I'm a new enthusiast and would like to shoot the .54 with nice folks. I can shoot in my yard here, but if I did that in Brooklyn, I would get a set of new bracelets....................  Rich

We have many Mountain man clubs in Montana scattered throughout the state.  The best bet is to enquire at your local sporting goods store and they may be able to direct you to the local club.

There is a club in Libby, just down the road. Contact Mark Morain at Kootenai River Traders (406-293-8239) or mmorain@frontiernet.net

Thanks. My house is on the Yaak River, 14 miles from Troy. Libby is the next town east. Almost a hop skip and jump :D

There will be a spring shoot in first weekend in April out of Libby (Fawn Ck).  The third week end of April (26,27,28) our Tobacco River Muzzleloader has our annual rendezvous out of Eureka.  Come to any of those and you can get dates, etc. from the folks in attendance for the rest of the summer and fall.

You can check too on the NMLRA website for charter clubs and monthly shoots.  Might find something.  The BPCR crowd is pretty active in Montana too.

You might be interested in attending the Montana Historical Gunmaker’s Guild annual gun fair in August.  If you are, e-mail me and I’ll send you the details.

Just chiming in on the Tobacco Valley RDV in Eureka.
I used to go over to that every year.  I really enjoyed it.  In its early days it was quite tied in to the town celebration.  Good fun walking in the parade, olde west type shootouts, a great bunch of guys used to come down from Canada for the weekend, Saturday morning all you can hog pancake feed, beard contest, etc.  After a few years, the RDV itself moved out of town into its own site and became more RDV like and less involved with the town.  Regardless of the format, it was always a good outing.  The shooting competition got better and better over the years to the point where you really had to put on your A game to win.
I am sorry to say it has probably been 20 yers since I have been to it, but in my mind it remains a great event.

About 10 years ago the town revitalized Rendezvous Days.  We (the Tobacco River Muzzleloaders) are very much a part of the celebration.  The parade on Saturday is one of the largest in Montana.  The overall celebration draws thousands to town.  Our actual rendezvous site is located a couple of miles north of town.  We encourage primative camping but do have available tin tepee camping.  The Canadians still come down.  We used to have upwards of 180 registered shooters.  Last year was closer to 110-130.  Our club enrollment has been shrinking so for the rest of us it is primarily a working affair to see that everything get accomplished.   It is a great weekend, but sometimes the weather is "variable."  Come on back.
