Were southern rifles ever trimed in a mix of brass and iron as they were conservative and didn,t want to waste anything and used what on hand?

Yep, get Dennis Glazener's book on the Gillespies.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

My first build was patterned after an original rifle a distant relative of mine owned from southern WV. It had brass trigger guard and butt plate, pierced brass side plate and iron nosecap. The thimbles were iron except the center thimble was brass.
