The Old and the New
« on: August 24, 2018, 03:22:31 AM »
Hi,
The two English guns on the right are >250 years old.  The 2 on the left are my recent creations carrying on that wonderful tradition and history as best I can.  I hope this makes some of you think of those great color plates in Neal and Back's books on Great British Gunmakers.

Nice, Dave!  Your shell carving’s are better than the originals.

Is the piece on the far right silver mounted?  I love the sculpted shell on the butt piece tang.  You don’t see that on a lot of English work, at least I haven’t....  Thanks for the post, beautiful work.

Did all fowlers have hooked breeches or was that an English style? Very beautiful!

Really nice, tight work, Dave.  I shall copy your pics to serve as a guide when I start carving on mine.

Beautiful work Dave.
You really nailed the details.

Only thing missing is the wrought-iron seat!

Hi Folks
Thanks for looking.  Scott, I sure did shoot her:

Webradbury, yes the vast majority of British fowlers during the mid-18th century had hooked breeches and tangs.

Richard, I was really hoping you would chime in and say something like that.  I wanted to find a cast iron seat in the worst way.  I even tried a black colored outdoor chair but the stump worked the best.

Thanks again for looking and commenting,
dave

Remarkable! Were the originals in that fine condition or have you done restoration? Happy to have seen your fowler at Dixon’s in the flesh but regret not getting to talk with you. Every time I stopped by you were busily engaged and I had trouble leaving blacksmith shed for very long. (Coal smoke addiction)

Dave,

Your work has just been getting better and better!  You have emerged as one of the top builders I know of and are an inspiration to us all.  Your attention to detail and your deep, probing research serves as an example to me, and many others I suspect, on how we ought to pursue our fascination with the arms of a previous age.

I am honored to have you as a friend!

Keep up this stunning work.

Best Regards,

JMC

Hi and thanks for looking and commenting.  I appreciate the posts.  John, thank you very much for your kind and supportive comments. I wish I felt all that competent when I am actually building but I do the best I can.  You are no slouch as a builder.  I can't wait to see your double progress and wheelock.
