Good deal, you figured out the best for your rifles.  I think it probably depends on each rifle, like loads, balls, lube, and such.  If you read The Muzzleloading Caplock Rifle by N. Roberts, they supported at the front too.  They may not have ever tried further back.

"Depends on the gun & the accuracy you demand or are willing to put up with. "

Many of those muzzle-rested guns in Ned's book, had no forend, and many had muzzle-rests attached to the barrels.

OK, since the past few posts have nothing to do with a Gillespie, maybe we need to start a new thread "where to rest" or such.

We are discussing how you can rest your Gillespie rifle to test your loads for accuracy.

It seemed to be a generic discussion on where to put the rest.  Doesn't matter what type of longrifle, it seems to be people arguing about where to place the rest.  I already have decided what I'm going to do, so any further discussion isn't about me and my rifle.

Carry on. My point was simply you have to try various "methods" to see which one is best for YOU and your rifle.
