Gunstockers horse
« on: January 03, 2021, 01:01:23 AM »
Due to some requests for information on the gunstockers horse I built some years ago, my son and I are in the process of rewriting instructions and redrawing the blueprints that were lost in a computer crash some time ago. I had planned to have this project done in time for Dixon’s last summer. Not.... I expect we will be done by the end of the weekend. BJH

Here's what google found hopefully it's the right one. Appears to have been posted on ALR at one time as BJ's Gunmaker's Horse

BJ,

That would be an awesome thing to have in the shop! Let me know if you ever get those blueprints drawn up.

Hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday season!

I expect to have them done this weekend give or take. Brian and I retyped the instructions on ms word this afternoon. I am taking a break from redrawing the first blueprint sheet now. Will continue tomorrow. There are three sheets of drawings. They have to be redrawn in black ink to be cleanly copied. It’s surprising how much my handwriting has deteriorated in 5 years. Probably just the coffee. GBG.   BJH

The wooden vise set up I designed for this project has served well for 5 plus years of use. Plus between the leather covered wooden vise jaws and the soft wood steady rest the chance of dinging a maple stock is greatly reduced. Yes I do use 3 different metalworking vises on my other benches as needed. Also the bench works well for my horn work, and cleaning my guns. Shaving walking sticks among other uses. BJH

The new plans and blueprints are complete. They will be for sale on the items for sale side of the forum. Proceeds will be once again donated to the forum. More information in the for sale area. BJH

The first picture posted is of the one I built. If anyone is curious, I still love it. BJH did a great job designing this horse. I made one change in that I spun one leg around for better access and found it also offers more resistance to racking.

I use it for stocking up as it was intended. Built one rifle on it and now building another.
I use it to clean my rifles as well.
I clamp wood to it for sawing dovetails.
I clamp a moxon vise on top of the beam for holding wood projects.
I clamp all sizes of wood to it, even large panels, for hand planing.
I drilled a hole through the tail and bolt a small swivel vise to it for engraving.

It is my second most used tool, not counting anything with a sharp edge.
