Yes , your right .... I'll try to better the next time ....... perhaps on your new flinter we can slim er down a bit more !!!!!

Allen, don't tease us with just one photo!!  Looks like the real deal.  Love those Lehigh rifles you make.  I also think the lock panels are too bulky.

Properly sharpened tools decreases the chance you will chip out wood around the lock also.  Don't be a teasy. Show us more.

Allen, Having the lock set so low ( meaning very little wood underneath it ), would you care to elaborate on where the RR hole is in relation to the front lock bolt and how much of any web is left near the breech ? I've heard about running RR hole right up into the bottom of the barrel , but what then do you do about a lug for the rear barrel pin/wedge ?  When I hear the old phrase about " the art and mystery" of gunbuilding, this part is the biggest mystery or challenge to me.

The r.r. hole needs to up , all but touching the barrel at the very breech .... I like to have my web about 3/16" to 1/4" at the muzzle and like I said touching the barrel at the very breech ....This makes you place the lock higher .
As for the front bolt .... you can notch the barrel so the bolt clears and notch the lock bolt so the r.r. clears ... it's called the art of fudging ..... Most folks will use a thinner bolt but like the original I used a 10/32" ..... and .090" barrel pins !!!
the rear underlug will most likely break through into the r.r. hole but keeping the underlug blade shallow everything should clear !!!

Here's a before & after pic. of the lock and what I started with ..... and the original with the new shiny lock before aging ..
I started with and ol Doc Haddoway ..... and lots of filing , welding , grinding , more filing .. refitting new parts , ...... and there you have it !!

Allen, that is great work.  That's the kind of replicating that really excites me, except for one thing.

When one comes upon an original that is in tough shape, through neglect, abuse, hard use, or whatever, one thinks, "man, if only this gun wasn't so beat up - what a piece it would have been in another day.  I cannot grasp why a client would have a new gun made to look like that, when you have the opportunity to turn back time to a pristine rifle.  I may never understand that.
