New Hunting Gun
« on: November 30, 2016, 11:22:25 PM »
I don't own a lot of muzzleloaders no more and not one I'd like to drag through the woods so I made myself one from extra parts I've accumulated over the past 4 or 5 years. It's a .54 cal by 46" Colerain octagon to round smoothbored barrel I replaced on a 16 gauge gun with the same profile. It's been sitting in a corner for a couple years now. The wood is a piece of maple from the hills of southeastern Pennsylvania. Lock is a Chambers with the tail ground off that was going on a southern style gun that wound up using a different lock. No entry pipe, no butt plate, some left over Northwest gun pipes, left over side plate from I've no idea where and a bent sheet brass trigger guard. It's got a few blurbs but the deer won't care how it looks after they get a hole poked through em. It tips the scale at 7 1/2lbs with a 13 1/4" pull. I deer hunt with a coat on so the pull is just about right for me.

I used such a slow shutter speed on that 1st picture I had time to get both sides of the gun in the same picture...
OK. Not really. I lie a lot.

That should get the job done. How do you transport it to your hunting grounds? I don't think I could fit it in my pickup it looks so long.

That's a "meat on the table" shooting iron for sure. Nice, and made from parts found hiding out in the shop. Good job, and hope you bag a nice (whatever).  ;D

Keb, Nice job! These guns that are "put together" are so much fun because you don`t have the constraint like building a copy or school gun. And when you don`t have a ton of money in parts you can feel better about it too!! Thanks for sharing!! Nathan

Tom, it just rests against it. No sharp points or concave shapes. I pull it into my shoulder, squeeze the trigger & bang.

Love it!

That's either some good photoshop work on the first photo, or you lied yet again and made two!

I love it!
When a nation forgets her skill in war, when her religion becomes a mockery, when the whole nation becomes a nation of money-grabbers, then the wild tribes, the barbarians drive in... Who will our invaders be? From whence will they come?

Nice. I like. I have a couple of old guns that were built on this order, using parts that were from other guns and parts cobbled up by the maker. Some have already had parts taken from them by someone else. Thanks for posting Keb.........Bob

I shot it over the weekend and had some problems with it going off. I started with 50 gr 3F, .535" ball & .018" pillow tick spit patch. That was a little tight for my liking so I switched to a .530" ball. Perfect. I made the gun without a liner which is usually OK but not on this barrel. I added a SS liner and that fixed that. I also was having some problems with the pan not flashing. I put a new sharp flint in with the bevel up instead of my usual bevel down and that cured that. I wasn't shooting for accuracy, just shooting to see how it shoots. However, it was hitting at 11 o'clock about 3" high at 25yds. All in all, I'm plenty pleased with how this gun shoots. Deer season is over so I have a lot of time to get it to shoot where I aim.

You could still probably knock of some squirrels...
aim center mass, you won't lose any meat.  35 grains of powder can do wonders....
