Birdseye Maple gunstock wood?
« on: February 12, 2017, 02:15:30 AM »
A while back on gunbroker saw a little 28ga cap lock with Birdseye Maple stock. Looks like someone had restocked a cheap Spanish import with a beautiful piece of wood. Any contemporary makers using this type of wood? I usually only see it being used as furniture veneer.

Treebeard,  although I am not a longtime builder, I did carve my first rifle out of a birds eye slab.  Turned out to be a nice choice for my Vincent.

Bill Brockway used it on a rifle.  Beautiful wood, but the most "contrary and hardest to carve" of any he used.

I made a Tenn. style rifle with birdseye back in the 80's for a customer in England.  I don't remember it any more contrary than any other highly figured piece of maple.

Thanks for the several replies. It would be great if any one has pictures! When I was working as a gun smith I saw a couple modern bolt actions with Birdseye stocks that I thought looked pretty good but nothing beats the beauty of a well made flintlock longrifle.

I used it for the back of a violin I built years ago. Pretty when done, but the little eyes can "pop" out when being worked if you aren't careful. Approach the finished surface carefully when working.
