Bag # 20 - Hog Hunter's Pouch
« on: December 08, 2019, 11:37:25 PM »
This is a simple bag I just finished up, and I went for a "rustic" finish.  Why is it a "hog hunter's bag"?  Because it is made out of pigskin.   :-)   It is a one-piece folded over design (7"x7"), and is lined in suede cowhide for strength and comfort.  The pigskin is dyed with a blend of Fiebing's Pro Dye, oiled, and is finished with wax.  It also has my favored stiffener inside the back top.  The straps are bridle leather.  Blacksmith iron buckle.  The edge of the flap is scalloped just for looks.  God Bless,  Marc

Now that is what I call a proper "huntsman's" bag. Well done The "Muskrat" approves.

I like it. Pig, although tough can be flimsy so I like the stiffener addition for flimsy leather.
I personally LOVE a fold over flap for my own use and have done so for 40 years on my own hunting set-up

That’s a beauty, Marc...I love the colors and the well thought out construction of your bags. Where’d y’all get that fancy button?

Hi Greg,

I think that button came from Colonial Williamsburg.  I like to haunt the shops (pewter shop, Tarpleys, silversmith, millinery, etc.) and stores there in search of anything I might be able to use.  If not Williamsburg, it might have come from Camden last month.

Once the new buttons go into the "button bag", it is hard for me to recall where I got a particular one. The buckles are a bit easier to place.  I have a few beautiful domed pewter ones from Mitch Yates that I am itching to use.

I think a "Join or Die" snake item will be next.  Great image.

Thank you for the kind comments folks.

James, I agree about the thin Pigskin, that's why I lined it in suede cowhide to provide body.  Feels better when you stick your hand in too.  The top back stiffener keeps the top more rigid so the "hinge" operates better, and it provides more anchor for the strap stitching.  Easy to do, and hopefully allows the bag to live longer.

God Bless,   Marc

Full disclosure, I saw a bag that Bob Hill did for a customer out of pigskin, and decided to try to make one with the same flavor.  Bob provided the hide.  God Bless,    Marc

Looks a lot like you had fun building this and looking at it for the first time.  You gonna build a gun to go with it?

Hey CapGun,

A man's got to know his limitations, as Clint Eastwood said.  I spent my youth playing music, working on cars and dating girls.  I sadly did not do much wood or metal working.  I know what my standards are in longrifles, and my skills would not allow me to get there before I turn room temperature.  I am blessed to know some great longrifle builders, so I am doing fine there.  I'll stick to leather for now, and leave rifles to the experts.  :-)   But maybe one day I'll play a rifle builder on TV.  Hah, hah.

God Bless,   Marc
