Which style/school of rifles uses cast pewter chevron nose caps?
Has anyone seen this type of cap on a pistol?

Best regards

Woodburry.    Honestly, while it looks really cool and I have done several myself....I have never seen a chevron pewter cap on an original Southern rifle.  Pewter or lead caps in different designs but not a chevron style

I have seen 2 original full stock  southern mountain rifles with the cast pewter nose caps.  One was the solid style and the other cheveron style.  Both original percussion.  I shoulda bought both of them.  They were pretty cheap - but I was pretty broke........Lynn

Rolf,
If you're thinking of it for the pistols you're going to build, unless you want to stay exactly in the style/school you're going to use, I think a cast chevron muzzle cap would look pretty nice! Make it relatively long and slender and it'll look pretty darn well graceful with a long barrel.

Lynn, Don't you hate it when pretty broke gets in the way of pretty cheap!

Pretty uncommon on original rifles, but I have seen a few. Have yet to see one on a pistol. Jerry Noble's "Notes on Southern Long Rifles vol 1" shows a neat rifle attributed to William Douglas with a nice chevron pewter cap, pewter inlays and long buttplate comb. Another by an unknown builder in vol 4, pg 91.
George Washington Hatfield was an Indiana builder who used the chevron pewter cap, perhaps somebody more familiar with his work would know if he ever made pistols with this feature
