toe plate thickness?
« on: May 21, 2010, 11:49:30 PM »
I've just about got everything mounted in my stock. It's still square for the most part, but I should be shaving off the wood soon.

I intend to put the patchbox latch button in the toe plate, and I have a pretty thick buttplate. Should the toe plate be the same thickness as the butt plate (seems excessive).

I have several sizes of brass to choose from, I just don't know which one to use.

What thickness do you use?

Generally 1/16" brass for an toe plate.

1/16" is what I use.  If you think your buttplate is pretty thick it sounds to me like you need to taper and thin the edges down.

I haven't actually tapered the edges on the plate yet. At this point I'm just trying to get everything mounted. final filing and polishing will come after I get some more wood out of the way.

I'll try the 1/16 brass. I now just have to decide on a look.
Can't decide if the finial on the toe plate should match the patch box, or the barrel pin escutcheons.

I'm one month away from the one year mark in this build. Seems like something is always coming up. I'll be putting the project away again to install a roof next week. Someday, I'll finish this thing.

Don't be in a hurry to get the gun finished. Try to get everything the way you want it. Ten years down the road you'll be really glad you took the time.
