Start of my grand son's flinter

I am starting my grandson's rifle with a GM 36" X 7/8" .40 cal straight barrel that I have on hand. I am attempting to "swamp" it to reduce weight. I am removing the bulk of the material with my Grizzly mill (travel of only 17"). I started the taper from the breach area toward the muzzle and then repositioned the barrel and came back from the muzzle toward the barrel waist. I then started to draw file to blend in the transition of the two intersecting areas. Total work so far 12 hours. Its time to stop and relax - more filing next week!

I have a  shotgun and a rifle from each of my Father's Granddad's that are treasures to me. I cannot imagine what these would mean if they had built them. Great to see something good carried from generation to generation.

Before the lines get too long if you have ever thought of adopting any balding middle aged grandson's who might get a FL built for them too give me a call...

Rick, I'll let you know if I will take you on as another "grandson" after I get this one done. I built my son a .36 cal flinter when he was 10 (he's 33 now). He thinks a lot of it - I tried to get him to display it over his fireplace but his wife is anti-gun and the last time I tried their was a BIG argument and of course I lost. But with this one I will take the grandson out to shoot it first and let HIM pester his mom to put it on display - he, he, he!!
