i am looking for an gunsmith who has restored or restores Kentucky rifles or similar rifles, who lives in Michigan.  I live in the U P near Sault Ste. Marie and make frequent trips to Lansing and the Detroit area. Thanks Roger

Roger -

Glad to see you made the trip from GB. The moderator "nononsense" and I have had words since he pulled the info off "his" forum. Apparently you may wish to consult him as he obviously knows more about long rifles than we here.

A further word of advice if you will. Don't get too hung up on a local restoration. Much better to seek the opinions of a few here through a good photo set, then perhaps the opinion of a fairly local collector.

Generally speaking restoration, except for very special pieces, is not favored. Repair, on the other hand, is not frowned upon if done properly and is well documented.

Should you have a "generic" late gun the cost of quality work might well exceed the value of the piece. On the other hand an earlier high quality gun might be a totally different story.

Photos please! If you can't post them just attach them in a mail to me...

Best of luck!

Roger,

This really depends on what you have, what you think you want done and what should really be done.  Mark Silver and I are here in da western UP but Mark only does restoration work if it's on really good stuff and really needs done and then only if he's in a weak mood.  I can do good basic restoration work if you're not in a hurry to have it done. There are several trolls who I could recommend to do some stabilization and repair type work but whom I wouldn't recommend to rebuild a Dickert.  Send me a message and I'll send you my phone number and we can talk.

Tom
