Stocks with No Buttplate

Over the summer/fall I built a very plain club butt fowler from a inletted kit. I added a nailed on flat brass buttplate (like a Northwest trade gun) and I am not happy with how it looks. So, I removed the plate with the intention of reshaping the butt to be without a plate.

Is there any special way I should treat the wood? Just like the rest of the stock?

Grab..........I have built a lot of barn guns.....no buttplate.     I saw the stock off with a slight curve, just like a lot of buttplates, then round if off to resemble a buttplate.   When it comes time to finish it, do the same thing that you are doing to the whole stock.     You will find that a sealer will really soak into the butt, you may want to add additional coats
in this area...................Don

This is what I figger'd on, but I wanted to get a second opinion. I finished the gun with a beeswax and mineral oil mix, so I think it will be an easy blend on the buttstock.

When you say 'treat' you may also consider this 'treatment'. Some chip carving in to the end grain to prevent the ol girl from sliding up and down on your shoulder. I know Ol Herschel did that on at least one 'rifle gun'  So. Mt style.  Looks good and works.

Built this one W/O buttplate and used it for a season.  Would prefer abuttplate and install a heel plate.

They tend to wear in that area and should install some antler on the heel.  The toe plate isn't all bad either.  Also I load off of my shoe and would prefer to just stick it in the dirt like I have others.

I  have a poorboy that I have hunted with since 1986 the horn on the but started out sharp it dulled up some but seems to have stopped or at least it dont change much from year to year.
