Rice barrel.
« on: January 24, 2011, 12:41:37 AM »
Just popped for my first straight Rice barrel I'll be using for my personal Lehigh rifle. What can I expect from this barrel as opposed to Green Mountain? The finish is really nice, almost ready for browning, and the bore looks awfully bright too. Are they worth the extra $$$? I have a couple of their swamped barrels and like them, first straight barrel from them.

I have a Rice barrel. I also own Getz, Colerain , Green Mountain, and Rayle and Long Hammock  Barrels, and they all shoot wonderfully. Hard to pick a favorite, but IMO the Getz, Rice, and Rayle werethe best finished out of the box.  To answer your question, you can expect great performance. Just find out what it likes.

I own two rifles with Rice barrels and they are both excellent shooters.  They clean up and polish easily, and take a brown or rust blue very well indeed.  My current project also has a Rice barrel, so that'll give me three.  Getz and Rice barrels are my favourites.

As stated above, the rifle should shoot well.  (As long as all the other factors are in line)  So far I have used Green Mountain, Rayl and Rice.  All shoot very well.  Some here may have information about round bottom  vs square bottom rifling fouling differences.  I do not shoot very often but when I do, I run a wet patch followed by a dry patch every three shots so have never had any issues in that area.

For a all around target barrel and the money you can't beat a GM straight barrel. Now I am not saying that the Rice barrel is not worth the money all I am saying is that unless you are an exceptional shot most will not be able to tell the difference in accuracy.

I shot a GM barrel for many years, it was a 1" 50 cal. 42 inches long. It was a half stock with a horse head patch box. I won several one gun matches with it and a few offhand matches. I also have shot most all of the other brands out there and I don't think any will out do the GM barrel, again for the money.

I can honestly say that any barrel made today will give more accuracy than most of us are capable of making a rifle do.

Again not knocking you barrel because I like Rice barrels they are about as slick a finished barrel as I have every used. Loads smooth and easy to clean, well finished inside and out. You won't be sorry you spent the extra for it.

You have Rice in the swamped version---me too---Nothing else needs said. Awesome barrels and well worth the $. I dont see a BIG diff. in $$ between the best made....those listed---my top two would be Rice then Getz or is it Getz then Rice   ;)

There is something about dealing with and giving business to a small family run shop that is far more satisfying than buying from a larger company. Supporting a real small business is worth a few extra bucks to me.

The Rice barrel has a 1/2" threaded journal (?) for the breech plug, and probably came with the breech plug correctly fitted.  I really like that (having built almost 50 longrifles).  The Green Mountain will have a 5/8" long journal (I think), and so I cut that breech off 1/8".

I don't have but one, but if it is representative of the company, you will never be sorry you spent the extra $$. Sometimes just knowing you have the best makes you concentrate a little more and the scores go up. Whether due to any physical characteristics of the barrel or not is inconsequential, the score still went up.
My only problem with mine is that it makes me want another, and another, and another, etc...

Thanks for the reply guy's I really appreciate it! I am a good shot and do look forward to shooting her! Cost isn't really a limiter for me,so I don't mind spending more for a good product from a small firm. Thanks again for the reply's!
