Mattole;
I think you've got plenty of material left to work with.  First, bring the level of the lock panel down to the level of the lockplate.  Bring the other side down to match.  This will give you a bit more length to work with.  Draw a point at the extreme rear point of the lock panel approximately centered vertically on the wrist.  Draw curves along the top and bottom of the panel from about the position perpendicular to the tumbler hole to this point similar to those on the Hawken you like - this will be somewhat pointier than the existing.  Play with these drawn lines until you get what you like, then carve.
Hope this helps.

What Swampwalker said!  you have plenty to work with..... subtle changes make a real difference in appearance.

Tim- I've been unable to access Taylor's thread on the re-build he did on Brian Dancy's GPR. Can anyone find it?  It would be quite helpful, perhaps.

As to the butt, I think I'd splice on a slab with a panel-groove to hide the "joint".

I will look

But I am missing something here....why add more wood to the butt........ it looks good why not just cut off the buttplate and make sure it fits well and the put a toe plate on it??  Seems to me a 4"+ butt is enough......... maybe not Hawken size but it has a pleasing look now..............

Now - if we can only get him out to burn some powder in it - & finally get it dirty.

I see what you are referring to but I would cut the butplate off and reshape the end of the stock and BP to a pleasing contour and not worry about it, looks good as is.
You have been given some really good advice here.  Now to put in my 2 cents worth.  My mentor on my first build (all hand tools electricity hadn't been invented yet) told me when I come to a problem to hang the rifle on the wall and come back later and look at it, the next day cut the grass and come back and look at the rifle, the next day wash the car and come back and look at the rifle.  By giving yourself some time to look at it you will see different things and have a better idea of what needs to be done, or else you will have everything else done and have nothing else to do but work on the rifle

I aree with Whitebear;  When I build I get it to near finish fotm and put it on top of the entertainment thingy for a couple of days and eyeball it during the ads. Surprising what you might see to-morrow. On my current Berks build I didn't do that and now I see that the P B finial is a bit to high at the point by near 3/16 ths. My shop is so small that you can't get a long look at it. Also take a look at it in a mirror. . Some artisits do that in the composition stage.

look at it upside down too. that helps to get your eyes to see what is really there and not just what your brain thinks is supposed to be there.

Have the holes in the butt plate welded closed, plug the holes in the stock with dowels and redrill.   If the profile is acceptable to you, just file the bottom of the butt plate off.

Bill

I am about to resume work on the Lyman GPR rebuild, and was wondering about Bill's suggestion to weld closed the existing countersunk holes in the buttplate (see original post). What kind of hole size should I redrill it with and what size and type of screw should I use?

Welding and redrilling the holes in the buttplate sounds rather precarious, but I would indeed prefer to center the hole in the buttplate rather than have it so far down as it is now.
