Smithsonian Rifle
« on: July 01, 2011, 12:31:11 AM »
Folks,

Is this rifle listed in either RCA volume?

http://www.historyexplorer.si.edu/artifacts/resource.asp?id=2942

I ran across it researching something else and though I realize it is not a "Schimmel" type Jaeger, it looks like an early/simple rifle with Jaeger roots.  So I thought I would post the question here.

Hello Gus - I am not positive but I believe there has been discussion on here about this rifle - if it is the one shown in RCA Volume 2 with the birch stock, under "Rifles of Unknown Origin"?

If I am not mistaken, wasn't there some speculation that it might even be Swedish in origin?

Guy,

Thank you.  I will look it up.  I didn't realize it had a birch stock.

Probably rifles like this were around, whether made here or not.  It's plain, but complete (not a schimmel-style or barn gun as it has every part a rifle normally has, buttplate, guard, all the thimbles, sideplate, patchbox, nosecap.
