Secongost, Josiah M.
« on: January 23, 2012, 04:52:27 PM »
Dr. Whisker has unearthed another gunsmith of the Shreckengost family.  I've seen this phonetic spelling on
other census records for the family.  If anyone has any info on him I would appreciate your sharing.

Secongost, Josiah M. (1835-). gunsmith. 1880-89, Boonville, Cooper County. 1870, hotel keeper, Versailles, Morgan County. 1880, Josiah, Boonville, 45, carpenter, born in PA; Barbara E, wife,  40; John T., 22, “at home”; Lily Thomas, adopted daughter, 14 [Census]. This man is undoubtedly a member of the Schreckengost family

Rob,
I believe Dr. Whisker located this gunsmith in Missouri. Correct?  It would be very interesting to be able to link this gunsmith with the other Schreckengost gunsmiths.

Mark,  The link is there.   Josiah was the son of Peter Schrecengost and Mary Schrecengost of
Armstrong County, PA.  I have info on Peter's father, but it's in a foot thick pile of documents
somewhere.  Yes, in Missouri.

Rob,

Boonville, Missouri is an interesting town with a fascinating history. It is strategically located on the Missouri River about halfway between St. Louis and Indepedence (Kansas City).  It is named after Daniel Boone. It was a supply depot for pioneers heading west on the river boats. It was also the site of a couple fierce battles during the Civil War.  It looks like Josiah went there sometime after the close of the war in hopes of cashing in on the migration of settlers through the area. I imagine Boonville was a potentially wild place back then!

Mark,  Here is the connection.  Josiah was the son of Peter and Mary Schrecengost.  Peter was the son
of my ggggg grandfather Conrad which would make Josiah the brother of Benjamin.  It's interesting that
he looked to have been repeating what the family had done for 2 previous generations which was to
settle on the edge of the frontier and make rifles.
