Solder mask or stop
« on: May 06, 2012, 02:07:37 PM »
What can be used to stop solder from sticking where you don't want it when soldering an under rib to a barrel?  Just trying to make clean up easier.

Thanks,
Bill

One thing I've seen recommended many times is typewriter correction fluid (white-out is a brand that comes to mind)
I must add that I have never tried it... perhaps a test-piece before committing to your gun!

Cheers, Joe

White out will work, or when I do that, I am careful on laying out the flux.
I pretin both surfaces and file any excess away before I start. That makes it easier to sand any excess off when they are together.

Sharpened soap stone, run along the edge works well.

I use soap stone or yellow ochre for low temp(tin/lead based) solders and yellow ochre for silver solder.  I like the yellow ochre mixed with water because it can be painted on small parts such as a front sight base when soldering the blade ie- good for fine detail work.

I have to try these. I have always been careful with not laying on too much solder, but I end up doing a lot of cleanup.

Thanks for the replies.  I've tried White out with fair results.    Never heard of using inletting black. I'll give it a try.   Where would I get yellow ochre?   I googled it and found some is synthetic, some is natural.

Thanks,
Bill

Where would I get yellow ochre?

If you want to try some, send me your address and I'll send you some.  I have it as a pigment for making paint.

I had Bill Kennedy solder an underbarrel lug on a fowler for me.  He use a sharp chisel to peal off the runover solder and then the barrel was clean

A regular soft pencil lead has never failed me.

When mounting sights, I brighten up the metal, clamp the sight into position and then scribble all around the sight base with the pencil to cover the bbl & base with the lead (graphite).
Remove the sight base, tin the barrel area & bottom of the sight base (nothing will stick to the graphite coated steel surrounding it.
Put the sight back in place , clamp and sweat solder. It's quick and little or no solder clean up necessary.

You can do the same with the rib.
The soap stone works well too (same idea) I'm told though I've never tried it.

Habu,    Thanks for the offer.  I'm going to try the pencil and inletting black first, since I have both on hand.
