Jaeger58,
I've never heard of rust blueing solution.  Only using Wakon Bay's browning solution and then putting the browned part in boiling water.  There's more to it than that but that's the method I know for rust blueing.

Muzzleloader Builders Supply list the other products but not the Blue.  Call 'em up and see if it's still available.

Don't know that you need it though as I have had good results doing what Ken suggest with the Wahkon Bay browning solution.  Somebody told me once that they were the same but labeled different...don't know.  The brown works though.

Mix their brown and AF stain together. Works great for rust blue.
Their brown alone does not work all that the well for rust blue. The AF alone probably does though.

The Wahkon Bay browning and bluing solution is the same stuff, just in different bottles with different instructions.

The brown works as blue for me!

JDK,

I'm very close friends with the original owner/founder of Wahkon Bay Outfitters and he assured me they are the exact same formula-at least when he was making it.

I hate to be slow......... Aren't we talking about 3 different finishes?

Browning - Wahkon Bay Browning Solution
Bluing - Wahkon Bay Cold Blue Solution
Rust Bluing is a Process - Rust Brown the part and turn black by submersing in boiling water.

I'm going to throw this out there.  Couldn't anything that causes steel to rust be used?  Vinegar???

Yes, you can use a lot of stuff including nothing and steel will rust on its own.  Browning solution helps the process along and also helps get everything rusting at once rather than some spots rusting and some spots not.

Laurel Mountain Forge's Browning Solution comes with instructions for both browning and bluing all from the same bottle.  I would assume that Wahkon Bay's works the same.

The browning solution will work just fine for any type of blueing/browning you plan to do.  I use the standard browning solution cut anywhere from 1x1 to 1x8 with distilled water (in progression) when I brown damascus barrels to achieve a very fine grained controlled rust, to achieve the best pattern on the barrels.

I use a 1x2 or 1x4 dilution when blueing parts on London doubles.  It all depends on how fine a grain rust you want on the parts.  If you have parts with fine engraving you can not rust them too aggressively or for too long, or the engraving will be less pronounced.

For American longrifles you can use the solution full strength, or let rust for longer periods between cardings for a heavy layer of oxide.  It all depends on what type of finish you are trying to achieve.

I know Wahkon Bay marketed both the brown and the rust blue under separate labels at one time....not sure if Mike & Daughter does it that way now....only the instructions on the bottle were different.

I was told at the time they were the same formula, as was confirmed here, so I only assumed it was for marketing and to save buyer confusion.  Maybe they couldn't fit both instructions on one label on the little bottles.

Enjoy, J.D.
