I split this off from the topic "Southern rifle ideas?"

A good starter ref. is Dave Byrd's  "Gunmakers of Buffalo Valley & Greasy Cove"  which just came out, and it's less than $20 with lot's of pic's, and dimensions.  Dave's number is 423-735-7869.  Good luck on the build.
Bill,
I assume this is Dave Byrd of Unico County TN? Didn't know he had a book out. Any chance anyone has one and can report on it? Dave is as knowledgeable on East TN and Western NC rifles as anyone around, more so than most.

Yes, It's that Dave Byrd.  Funny story, He showed up at the Southern Rifle show at Norris about 11:00 on Saturday, and was starting to unload his truck, and also had some original Soddy'e, besides the books, two or three boxes.  Guy's started showing up, and he started selling, and signing the book right their on his tail gate., bore, overall length  At 1:00 he was still there, the show was coming to him, both interested in the book, and the Soddy's.  The book is packed with greg info.  The picks are a little weak, be each has a block with all the gun spec's including barrel length, Flint, or Perc, stock wood, whether its iron or brass mounted,  rough date of build, overall length  marking's, and other vitals.  Lot's, and lot's of biographical, and historical data.  If you call Dave you get an autographed copy mailed direct. there's two phone numbers 423-735-7869, and 423-895-2988.  I'm really surprised no one has posted about this book yet.  There's a lot of Beals, and Beansas well as Lawling's.  Lot's of info.  I wish I'd have posted sooner, Thought one of the "Guy's" would have  mentioned it.

Thanks Bill, missed the Norris show this year and really hated that.
Dave doesn't do much with the computer so the word would have to travel mostly by mouth or catch him at a local show. He has always been at the Norris show.

I bought one today.  Will pimp it a little at the NMLRA Territorial shoot Saturday with the Blue Ridge Mountain Men.

What's a "soddy"?

A "Soddy" rifle is a rifle in the style made in the area of a town in TN named "Soddy-Daisy". At one time Soddy and Daisy were two different towns but in the 60's they merged and became "Soddy-Daisy". This link has more information http://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=10960.0

Ken's desccription that Dennis posted the link to is excellent.  There are a couple more photos of Soddy guns in the Virtual Library under "Southern Long Arms".  This one in particular shows one of the most distinctive trait a lot of Soddy guns have - the line of the top of the wrist carrying straight back through the cheekpiece and running all the way straight back to the buttplate, resutling in a sort of elongated diamond -shaped cross section to the butt/buttplate.  Soddy guns are the only style longrifle I have seen to use this pronounced architectural line - most other types of longrifles carry the rear edge of the cheekpiece upward and rearward toward the heel or forward edge of the buttplate in an arc.

One should mention that some Soddy-Daisy (Hamilton county) guns were actually made near Pikeville (Bledsoe county) and that not every rifle made in that area conform to the distintive styling.
I do really like the style and am waiting for a copy of the new book.
