painted stock

Recently at the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody Wy. I saw a blunderbuss with a black painted stock and barrel. What is you fellows openion on painted stocks?  (Blunderbuss,trade gun. rifles ect.)

Painted stocks, and barrels, were pretty common on sea service weapons, clear up through the civil war. Blunderbusses were a pretty common weapon aboard ship as well. My guess is this short scattergun is off of a ship originally.

A Lehigh at the J Henry museum is painted red, as in milk paint. Pretty cool.

A painted gun sort of reminds me of those old pickups that someone painted with a brush. It works, but it is definitely not a thing of beauty.

I have read some accounts of trade guns being painted to hide the fact that the wood was junk.  Let me take a look to see what I can find what I recollect.

Ihave an old original that is painted red.....the paint is worn from handling marks and the wood beneatrh it is some nice maple with curl.

I don't understand why someone would want to paint over nice wood... suppose that is just personal opinion.
