.465 Round Ball
« on: November 15, 2012, 08:35:28 PM »
I recently acquired an original Leman trade rifle in .48 caliber. The rifle is in real great shape and has a great bore. I'd like to shoot it a few times to see what it will do and to be able to say I have shot it. Lyman at one time made a .465 RB mold but hasn't for some of years. I like to purchase either a used mold or a dozen or so round balls in .465 dia. to give this rifle a try. Can anyone help. Thanks.

I saw one on an online site sometime ago IIRC. If its a true 48 then a .465 is pretty loose. I would see if Jeff Tanner would make me  one that was .005 under actual bore size.
Based on the one I have he is fast in delivery (as fast as most in the US) and the moulds are good.

Lyman handles work with his blocks.
You can buy .480 swaged balls by Hornady. These might be an answer with a patch adjustment. Some serious shooters use .451 balls in 45 calibers.

There is a .465 mold on ebay now.
Nothing is hard if you have the right equipment and know how to use it.  OR have friends who have both.

I have received some .465's from a fellow forum member and I'll report on how they worked as soon as I can get to the range,

Bob

I got out to the range for a quick session and shot 10 rounds with some interesting results. I have uploaded the pictures of the targets to Flickr and had planned on posting them here, but not being a rocket scientist I have not been able to figure out how. I'm going into the shop now to cool off before the next round from the Leman is into this computer.
