Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

Do you have more information on these rifles? Caliber, barrel length, maybe the makers' names etc? Thanks.

Aren't we illiterate here in WV and go to school to learn to
wear shoes in bad weather? When I was in school I kept making
an "X"backwards and had to learn to sign my name.

Same here. Remember when I was in seventh grade, MR Wilson was going to beat by backside for smoking in the bathroom. I told him , my Daddy said if I were to get a whippin, he would do it , no teacher was gone to whip me. Mr Wilson says, "well son your daddy ain't here" I says, Yes Sir he is, he is in Mrs. Hotts 9Th grade class. & The way to tell if a person ( political correct male or female) is a true West Virginian, is they will have tobacco juice running down both sides of their mouth..

I would think as late as those guns are they would be signed. It seems to me that later West Virginia guns are more likely to be signed than earlier ones.  I have a good friend (old time  WV collector)who gave me so much grief about my unsigned WV guns that in the last two years I sold all but one of my unsigned  WV guns.

Awhile back I seen  signed M Sheets rifle that look almost identical the 3 third down one.  He is a Ohio maker. I think that most of these poorboy or those with out butt plates are  lil more South & or Southeast. The side plate on that looks like those of Ohio also.

It's simplicity. I'd like to see the lock side and some detail of the guard, triggers, entry pipe (if there is one).

To me, the gun makes a very direct statement: Here I am, a gun, no frills take me or leave me....pretty simple

Years ago, I had a fellow  bring a rifle by the house, that could have been that gun without a buttplate's flintlock brother from another mother. He said it had been in his family from day one. Built at the end of the flintlock era, with a round tailed plate, and double throat lock. It was from Pennsylvania. It had no buttplate, but it did have double set triggers. The trigger guard was made from what looked like a piece of an old trap spring, that fit into two hole that were hot punched into the trigger plate. The ends of the spring had a simple ear bent on the end of the bow that fit into the punched holes, and held tight by spring tension. The stock was black as night, and appeared to have been varnished originally. The barrel was about forty inches long, around .40 cal., rifled, and looked like it had been rust blued originally. It had two very short pipes and no entry pipe. He said his family came from around Reading originally. I assume this was a barn gun, but this term wasn't known to me then.

A lot of those PA made poor boy's or barn rifles were made in the Bayer\Bare shop. Some were even signed.
