Abraham Magahan Rifle
« on: March 24, 2013, 12:22:51 AM »
Here are some pics of an Abraham Magahan rifle I acquired. The barrel is 35 1/4" long and 7/8" wide with no taper. It is rifled with 7 lands and grooves and about 34cal. LOP is 12 3/4".  Butt is 3 15/16" X 1 1/8".   I have a federal census listing for Magahan as a gunsmith in Huntingdon Co., Pa. in 1850.  I would be grateful for any further information on him. Also, does anyone know the lock maker?

Thanks for looking and thanks for any information or comments.

Abraham Megahan (1816- ). gunsmith. 1850-70, Penn Twp., Huntingdon County. Quite a few of Megahan's guns are known although he was usually listed as a farmer. U.S. Census of 1850, Penn Twp., Huntingdon Co., age 34, gunsmith; Sarah A., 33; Rebvecca, 11; Louisia, 9; Mary, 8; Druscilla, 5; Uriah, 1. U.S. Census of 1860, Penn Twp., Abraham, age 43, gunsmith, $300 in property; Rebecca, 42; Louisia, 19; Mary M., 17; Uriah, 11; David, 9; John R., 5; Milton, 4. U.S. Census of 1870, Penn Twp., Abraham, age 53, gunsmith, $250 personal value, $800 real estate; Sarah, 52; Matilda, 23; Milton, 14; David, 19, printer.

Benjamin L. Megahan. farmer and gunsmith. Penn Twp., Huntingdon County. Noted in Africa's history as "retiring about 1854."

The name is pronounced me-gack-an and definitely not mega-han

Just thought I would bring its twin up for everyone to see without having to hit the link, Btw, I love the "Hex" marks or good luck marks at the muzzle!.

Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.
