I am trying to understand the very complicated mechanism.

That spring holds the drive key in the axel. The pyrite hammer can be held against the wheel under pressure, with the key in the shaft.

-or-

the pyrite hammer is dis-engaged from the shaft, with no drive key in the end of the shaft. Hammer can swing out of the way for cleaning, or a new pyrite.

Do I understand?

when the main string is tension - the wheel is automatically locked by the hook wheels - then you need to disengage the clutch hammer. - when he is on the clutch, the hammer is lowered to cover the pan - then the hammer spring maintains the hammer on the cover pan with adequate pressure -- the clutch is disengaged! you can shoot

I have a business idea for you- Do you know about those web-cameras where people watch things like baby eagles in a nest?

You need to set up a web-camera in your shop so folks can watch as you work 24 hours a day!

You can get some advertisers to scroll advertisements along the bottom and earn some extra money each time somebody clicks onto your site.

We could see what you have for lunch, what kind of shoes you wear.

I am happy with the pictures and descriptions. It is so much work to document the process in addition to the work he's already doing, it would slow Raz's gun work down. Maybe one of us could go over and film Raz at work. I volunteer for this.

I have been watching your interesting efforts on the wheelock. It is great that you share this with all who are following along. Your drawings and images help greatly in explaining the mechanical aspects of the lock.
You apparently are using a CAD program of some sort to apply drawings to photos. Specifically, what program do you use to do this?

Jim, and Raz, I am amazed by the addition of new parts to build up the lockplate, using dovetails and riveting. The multiple parts become one. This has been very educational for me. I will use some of the tricks learned here on my own projects. Thank you, Raz.

I have not been the least bit interested in wheelocks--until this thread. I think it makes the point that understanding leads to appreciation. You have expanded my universe, Raz, and I am extremely grateful. I used to tell my students that the more you learn, the more you can enjoy the world.

So much of this technology reminds me of wood joinery, the tenons, dowels and dovetails. The screw was a real advance in how things were assembled.

Of course the steel, and wood - these are two different materials . but the carpenters , and the locksmith profession - that two close cousins.

Old crafts - there are several groups of materials - just a few basic tools - this is similar to a violin, which has only four strings ....
