Here Are The Rules & Regulations For Our ALR Bi-Monthly Shooting Matches...

We Shoot For Fun And Bragging Rights - You May Enter All Three Shooting Matches (50, 100, & 200 Yards) If You'd Like, But You May Only Enter/Post One Score For Each Bi-Monthly Match You Enter.

You Will Need To Make Your Own Target For Each Match You Enter.  Black & White Poster Board Is All You Need.  Target Dimensions Are Listed Below For The (50 & 100 Yard Matches) and the (200 Yard Match).

"Traditional Flint or Cap Lock Muzzle Loading Firearms - Using Round Ball Only"
["Open Iron Sights - (Fixed or Adjustable) V, U, or Square Notch"] -or- [Aperture / Peep Sights]

For our 200 Yard Round Ball Match we will stay with our 200 yard target we established some years ago, I will post this target which was put together using a 22" x 28" white poster board with a 12 inch square black center, and a 5 inch white bullseye inside the black.

For our 50 and 100 yard round ball matches we will use another homemade target similar to the 200 yard target but smaller.  The dimensions are - 14" x 16" white poster board with a 8 x 8 inch square black center, and a 3 x 3 inch white bullseye inside the black. (see picture below)

The 50, 100, & 200 Yard Course's Of Fire Will Be As Follows,,, Enter Whichever One's You'd Like To:
5 Shots - Offhand
5 Shots - Your Choice (Offhand, Kneeling, Sitting, or Prone) X-Sticks or Chunk Allowed

Report your total 10 shot score's for the Match(s) you enter/shoot, in the thread(s) I will post/start for the following months as we move along through this.  Pictures are not required, but if you'd like to post a picture of your target(s), that is fine, and we'd like to see them.

Please report your monthly score's in the following manner with any thoughts you'd care to share.

Outer - White area  "Outside" of the "Black" - 1 Point - (22" x 28" or 14" x 16")
Center -  Black area "Inside" of the "White"  - 3 Points - (12" x 12" or 8" x 8")
Bullseye -  White area "Inside" of the Black Center - 5 points - (5" x 5" or 3" x 3")

Ball hole must be "half in" to get the next highest scoring area point value.

I re'worked the schedule (see original post) a bit so we can start these matches earlier since ALR has members around the world.  This new schedule allows everyone an equal chance to take part in both good and poor weather months.

Here's what it looks like;

December/January - (Open December 1 through January 31)

March/April - (Open March 1 through April 30)

June/July - (Open June 1 through July 31)

September/October - (Open September 1 through October 31)

For our 50 and 100 yard round ball matches we will use the - NRA TQ-4 (7 Ring Black), or the 7 & 8 Ring Black NMLRA Target's, your choice, all three are acceptable.

Dave, I went a'head and made changes to the 50 & 100 yard target above that we will use.  We are now standardized to eliminate the, "can I use this instead of that" question, which seems to always come up in these situations, and this is understandable as trying to relate every detail of something like this, does sometimes fall through the cracks.  No harm done.  Everyone should have access to poster board.  I'm thinking way back when, when we first started the 200 yard RB match, this was one of the reasons we settled on standardized poster board target.

Is there a rule for spotters?  targets and placement?  I've never shot official BP comps. 

I'm used to having a board with 6 targets.  one for spotting and 5 for score.  And i used to throw one shot over the targets in pistol matches to warm/foul the bore before dropping 5 into the black for score.  Also i've learned of the "floating" spotter since those days. 

Is there a blanket rule with regard to such?

Wade, we never instituted a spotter rule.  It's kind of shoot from the hip.  However, A person could post a practice target to get their range, that would be up to the shooter.  We would have no way to enforce a spotter rule - one way or the other.

You can use a smoothbore if you want LB.  Even if a person wants to use a side lock pistol, that is fine also.

LB:  I think you're on to something here.  It would really be interesting to see how well your 24 gauge smoothie would perform at those three ranges.  I'm sure you could keep their heads down anyway.

The smooth 4 bore Underhammer Taylor built some years ago, seemed to hold about a 3 foot pattern on the 300 yard dirt bank at our range. Seems to me, we were using about 300gr. of powder -2F I suspect, but might have been 1 F. The gun weighed around 50 pounds.  Should bored and lined with with a 70" twist .69 liner.   Like Taylor, I think that would be fun to watch - especially through a spotting scope.

Okay, well I've never shot open sights out to those ranges in competition.  Also never tried the "movable" spotter as I read about on here or somewhere.  Had learned to use spotter to dial in "KY windage" to bust those pinhead X's on the Hunter BR targets (through telescopic sights-but that was then, this is now).

Was thinking of using the moving spotter here to give a regular sighting picture instead of trying to remember the KY hold point. 

This all assumes i find the time to get more than 4 shots off in a day.    

Anyway, I like competition and want to play the game by ALL the rules.  Knowing the rules is the first step in knowing the game.

One more change in the rules.

We will allow Aperture / Peep Sights.

Since this is not a competition, but rather some matches thrown together for us here on ALR to see how we would do with long range round ball shooting, there really is no reason "not" to allow the Peep sights.  However, no scopes please.
