Another Full Stock Patchbox Gun, initials DS, any ideas?

079-0414-1318B, Long Rifle, with patchbox, and maker initials, DS on top of barrel.  Full stock, with maker initials in pattern of stars.  Functional double set trigger, the barrel is 34 1/2 inches long.  The bore gauges to 38-40 cal.  Single screw lock, and RS stamped on lock.  The gun shows years of honest hard wear.  Moderate pitting around lock, bolster and hammer.  Good to very good overall.

Regretably, again as in a recent other  posted gun , the patchbox allignment to the buttplate may tell as significant story related to this gun. Very  interesting and unfamilar barrel signature; I hope someone can identify it.

I'd look in the Carolinas for the origin of this rifle...with an edge toward South Carolina.  Shelby Gallien

In Chandler & Whisksers book, Chandler says that they removed some patchboxes from some rifles and in a number cases they found a grease hole. Indicating the patchbox was a later edition. I guess how late, may be the question.

I once owned a NC rifle signed D Sheets (probably David Sheets). The stock profile was similiar to this one and so was the cheekpiece other than this one is much shorter than the one on the D. Sheets rifle. The tang was shaped the same way but the one on the D Sheets was longer and used two screws instead of one.

Nice old rifle. With a Winchester rear sight now less. Looks like its been there for awhile.
Hard to tell from the photos but it looks like its been shortened at the muzzle.
