may need help
« on: September 04, 2014, 09:38:20 PM »
Well I may have to shift to a smaller shorter gun. I found out today I have another tumor
under my left arm that has to come out. Who makes a decent like 36" smooth bore ?
French or English.  This body is wearing out way too soon.

Try Charlie Burton (Ky) or Larry Horigan (Michigan) Ed Rayl. Their contact info should be in the "Services offered by the ALR members" classified forum on here.

My first thought would be get a Chambers English Short rifle kit but have a 31" smoothbore barrel made for it. I love the way that stock handles and I bet it would make a dandy smoothbore short fowler.

Actually I don't know if short is as important as light and balanced. A so called type G " Carolina" barrel is a great barrel for light & balanced.

This may just suck real bad . I make primitive bows and arrows too.
I hope and pray it's not cancer this time.
I think a trade type gun would work.

Sir, Colerain makes a 38" Oct. to round "C" weight smoothbore in 20 gauge. It weighs 3.64 pounds. $200.00 from Track of the Wolf.

Something like this? I used a 30", 12ga. round barrel. weighs a little over 5#.

My Chamber's Pennsylvania fowler with a 46 inch 20 gauge barrel handles like a dream and weighs less than 7 lbs.  It patterns reasonably well too.

My Chamber's Officer's Fusil is a fabulous gun.  It is stocked in cherry, is 20 bore, and has a 41 in tapered round barrel
It handles wonderfully.  It has the potential to become my favourite gun.  :)

Daniel, look hard at octagon-to-round barrels. I have a 42" x .54 rifled and a 46" x .50 smooth. Both are surprisingly fast and handy. A 38" or so OTR might be worth a thought.

Sorry to hear of your health issues, Daniel.

Good suggestions so far.

Are you looking for a barrel, or a complete gun?

Also I have a question about 'short', is this because you will have limited range of motion, as in loading a long gun might be difficult?

All the best, Tom

I am not sure on what I'm going to be able to do. The first tumor was fist sized. This one
walnut sized.  I think short was what came to mind , but a light weight complete gun
would be what I'm after. I am greatful  to all who responded. I have some bad nerve
damage in my neck and brain stem too.  Not to much fun on my end. Not going to
give up the ship yet. I trust God to take care of me.

I would suggest a chiefs grade English trade gun with a 30" barrel, in .24 gauge. I think that combination will produce a gun in the 6-7# range with a lot better trajectory than a corresponding gun in .20 gauge. Northstar West can probably produce such a gun. If not check with Joe at the Gunworks.

I've an old Curly Northwest Trade gun he built for a woman I use to know years ago. It tips the scale under 5 lbs. It's a 36" x 20ga. with a 12 1/2" pull. It's a wonderful little gun but a little short in the pull for me. My better half use to shoot it but she has since moved on to a 28ga.

In my heart I'd love to be able to build again.
A composite fowler, around 16 ga. 36" barrel .
Using military and civilian parts. A nut or fruit wood
stock. With a big butt.
