Making a lock
« on: November 19, 2014, 08:48:49 PM »
I would like to build a small flintlock for pistols. I don’t have a milling machine or lathe. I am thinking I might be able to buy lock parts and work these down to get a 3 ½” to 4” lock.
I am hoping some of the experienced lock builders will comment on this idea.

Why not go with a becky or small siler also parts kits... there is also the rifleshop that sells parts kits.

You can make your own plate and fit standard internals to it. The Becky parts are a good suggestion.

Thanks Acer. That is exactly what I was hoping to hear. I didn't want to waste money, time and ruin a lock on an ridiculous idea. I think the springs are the parts which will need shortening along with the sear arm.

I built a flint pistol lock plate with integral pan many many years ago using small Siler internals a hack saw, files a drill and various other hand tools.

Andy,
I have a small Siler flintlock kit if you're interested.
Cheaper than you can buy one elsewhere.

Andy, There's not much shortening you can do to already made springs, usless you mean, making new springs that are shorter than factory ones.  Your best bet by far, in view of your set up and apparent experience, is buying internals for a lock such as a Becky or Small Siler, and making your own plate.  If I were you, I'd take TOF up on his kind offer, and reshape the Siler plate to your liking.
