Taylor, You are correct. Most were not engraved but after 1842 when Tristam Campbell joined the shop some were engraved; probably for easterners going west. As described in Bairds book " The Mountain Mans Choice" there were ornate Hawkins in the Leonard and May collections. I'd like to see these but don't even know where to research. T. K. Dawson had an engraved rifle probably made by Sam marked Hoffman and Campbell. This may have been Francis Parkman's rifle. Do you know if there are better photos of the Leonard and May rifles? I'd like to use those for guidance. Bairds photos don't show much detail. Mountain men may have dressed-up a favorite rifle at Hoffman and Campbell late in their carriers when the gun wasn't exposed to rigorous use. The Mariano Modena rifle shows evidence of later rebuilding, silver stars, and fancy patch box. Thanks
