Moonshine stain?
« on: July 15, 2008, 03:06:35 AM »
Iwas talking to an older gentleman at a family reunion about building rifles.  I said something about Aqua Fortis, and the whole topic of stains went on for a while.  He said he had heard of people using "Panthers !$@!" as a stain.  I asked "what"??  and he clarified "Painters !$@!"  He lost me there.  He said they put it on the stock and heated it like aqua fortis.

Well, i was watching a show about "hillbilies" on the history channel.  They were discussing moonshine and going over the nicknames of it. and lo and behold "painters !$@!" was given.

Has anyone ever heard of such a practice?

I've had only one encounter with White Lightnin' and that was a few years ago when I was about 18.  A friend of my dad's had a jar of it.  Dad took a sip, I took a sniff.  I think it burnt the hairs from my nose.

I'm not a chemist, but I know there are a few around here that might be able to give us a hint as to the chemical viability of such a stain.

Yes you put a plug of tobacco in the shine and let it set for about two mo. strain trough cheese cloth rub in  to your stock , hold a red hot poker close to the wood to dry it and repeat as needed till you get the shade you want.

I used tequila and chewing tobacco [ suitably aged of course] on the first few guns I built. I liked it OK, especially on walnut. For maple, I think the iron filings/vinegar mix is better.

I have never used moonshine on a rifle as a stain...I try not to drool when I am working!

Seriously...it may work more as a cleaner to the wood (as Acer's lye trick) and then the suspended iron/tobacco/whatever may actually leave the "stain"...Just a thought.

Alcohol is alcohol.  All you are doing is making an infusion.  The alcohol evaporates after application leaving behind the stain.  It only aids in deeper penetration.  It's no different than any of the other "spirit-based" stains on the market.  Moonshine is grain alcohol (ethanol).  Heet gas line deicer is methanol, rubbing alcohol is isopropanol.  Any of them will work as a carrier.

Was standing beside some guy at an Eastern campfire a few years back, who was passin' around a quart jar, I sez  " sure would like to buy some of that...", he sez, "can't sell, it's confiscated,I,m a deputy, and have to disdose of it".
End of conversation....and the contents of the jar.  :o

I did have a (outlet) where i could get some . But my old buddy Popcorn kind of got caught when his still caught on fire. All that smoke, well some one called the fire department to put it out. It made the national news and TV, they even had him on the History channel ( Hillbilly). Last time i talked to him he said "the @!*% fine hurt more than the time !!"

someone who knows for sure might correct me on this but i think what is really happening when you use tobacco as stain whether it was soaked in alcohol or in ammonia and heated is you are just caramelizing the sugars from the tobacco, i tried it without heating, and it was a sticky mess

my dog's full name is "Popcorn Sutton Patton Jr. III".  He answers to "'Corn" mostly.

met Mr. Sutton back in 05.  It's a real shame about all of that-that transpired since then, but I've got his vidyea, book and photo and some photos of me and him and sech.

And know jest which log to lay my money down on...when i needs a little carburetor cleaner, non-aerosol version.  I mean, i did-i might have forgot by now.

"Denatured" alcohol is lab-grade moonshine with poison added to it.  Alcohol can be/is toxic without additives.

doodlebugs, now i'm thirsty.

Got to agree with you on this one.

Tried the tobacco stain using ammonia about forty year ago on my first build, and used a heat gun to to change and set the color.  It worked fine at the time, but all I use now is A/F, though it would be appropriate for a Southern gun of the 1820's or 30's.

With fall coming and campfire season. I don't think I will be staining any stocks with shine. And yes we still call it Panther !$@!. The only thing you should soak in it is cherries.

You probably used commercial chewing tobacco, which has sugar added.  Raw twist or plug tobacco should be used without any additives.  Forget the Red Man, Beech Nut, et al.

A quick stroll down the Parkway in Gatlinburg, TN and you'll be able to buy all you want ... legally .. watered down a bit ...  but shine non the less .. Can't recall exact location .. maybe traffic light #8 .. There's a fake still by the sidewalk ... the real one's just inside. I live and work very near by if anyone's truly interested I'll get the exact location and post it.  Take care .. Bill

"Warren County" twist is zero-sugar tobacco from Warren Co. Ky.  in case someone is looking.

as far as 'shine goes.  Tax-paid, legal liquor doesn't fit my definition of moonshine.
