recoil and wood
« on: January 03, 2016, 05:11:44 PM »
Been pondering something as I'm doing my build.Quess with larger caliber, larger charges the recoil and effects on the wood pops into my mind.On some originals some have split at the wrist behind the tang.As the wood ages theres always going to be movement in the wood, shrinkage, as well as some swell with humidity. My question, would one put a heavy bevel at the base of the tang in hopes that if it was going to move it would ride ever so slightly above the wrist and not stress the wood in that area or just go with it as is.I know most of the recoils effect is absorded at the base of the barrel.Anybody have thoughts on this?am I just over thinking things?

I always make sure there is no contact with the wood at the end of the tang.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

I file a more than usual draft on the tang end and the wood inlet wall is straight and the clearance when looking at it from the top is approx. .005-.007 {not measured}....Fred
