What type of tang is normally used on a Vincent?

A friend of mine is building a Vincent rifle, he has not seen one in person, I have but can't remember what the tang looked like. Anyone remember or have a photo of one?

Thanks Acer, that's what I kept running into. Someone told me to check the two Vincents in the Library and lo and behold both of them have spear (pointed) style tangs. That's surprised me since that's what I normally use on my Gillespie rifles.

    I have a drawing from 1985 of a Caleb Vincent rifle it shows the tang at
2 and 3/4 inches long at 1 and 5/8 inches from the end it starts tapering to a point.

Evidently that style tang is common and that's what my buddy will use. The two rifles in the library plus an original that a friend owns all had that style tang.

The top 3 images are of Vincents, while the last two are a variation of the same theme. There is another image (can't remember which one) that is a gun made by a man who worked for the Vincents, studied under them. His gun is a spitting image of a Vincent.

The tapered pointed tang, as I've noticed, was a style of the times that was popular in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and many others. You can find them on many, many percussion guns in the mid to late 1800's.

I have an itch to make a Vincent. 

As a short cut, I have been looking at Tracks kit. 

Anyone know if they cut the stock for the square tang supplied? 

I also have hesitation regarding the butt plate they selected.  The crescent is so radical and the top extension so dainty, I'd be afraid it could bend in normal use. 

I am afraid of using a 5/16 ramrod on a 45 caliber, spearing my hand when it breaks?? 

I will probably end up scratch building but, anyone do a Track Kit?

I just finished a Tracks Vincent kit.  It was my first build, so take my comments with a grain of salt!

The pre-carve tang inlet is shorter than the tang by more than enough to make a pointy tang like in the pictures above.  I cut my tang to a point like in the pictures above and had plenty of un-inletted (is that a word?) wood left to make it work.  

Some folks like the butt plate.  I do not.  I ended up cutting off the spike on the top rear of the butt plate, and there is one in the ALR archives without the long spear out the back.  Even then, I cannot bring it to shoulder like a shotgun, I have to push it out right a bit.  The butt plate is stout, really stout.  I was hoping to peen it into my terrible inletting job.....  No luck.  would have had to use a big big hammer.  

As for the ramrod, well, I don't intend to use it...

The stock is a bit fat, as you would expect from a pre carve.  Mine turned out a bit fat all around because I failed to take measurements before I permanently installed some inlays.  Lesson learned.

If you've never held an original Vincent, you can't believe how tiny and slim they are. Seems like you can't take enough wood off of it.

That looks great Norm.  Very nice job. 

I ordered my parts set today.  I got their best wood.  For a ramrod I will make or buy a spring steel core rod.  The track rods are dowels, not split hickory.  That is totally unsuited to the purpose, and dangerous,  IMHO. 

BTW, who sells real split hickory rods or rod blanks?
