Great tool.  I recently did my 40 caliber rifle.  Just follow the directions and you'll be good to go.  Get good sandpaper not the cheap thin stuff.  Buy the 2" wide double sided carpet tape, not the really cheap stuff in bulk.  Get "Goof Off" works great for cleaning the glue residue off the tool when changing the sandpaper.  Don't rush it.  I shot it this past weekend and if anything it shoots better.

I just received a .50 cal tool from Joe.  I've been trying to locate his recommended Manco carpet tape, can't find it anywhere.  What brand did you use?

Kunk, good alternative two sided tape is is Scotch Double Sided Tape, catalogue #137DM-2.  It is commonly found in the office supply section of stores or hobby houses.  Also, check for tape around a store's school supply section.  It's often used with poster boards.  Good luck!

I use Scotch 77 spray adhesive. Then clean the tool up between the changes with lacquer thinner.

Just make sure when you dust the back of the cut pieces with the spray hold it far enough away so they don't blow over into the over sprayed area

I just received a .50 cal tool from Joe.  I've been trying to locate his recommended Manco carpet tape, can't find it anywhere.  What brand did you use?

I got mine at Home Depot.  Don't think it was Manco came in a green box if I recall correctly.  Use the "Goof Off" melts the glue residue off the tool like it was soft butter.  I literally got the tool out of the package and had the barrel coned in about two hours taking my time.  I coned it a little more than Joe recommands.  I wanted to easily push the PRB below the muzzle with my finger.  I also used a thick patch for testing as i sanded away.  Joe recommands using a thin patch. 

Make sure you take the barrel out of the stock.  I wouldn't recommand doing this with the barrel still in the stock.

I use Ace Hardware  plastic carpet tape.  I have coned a bunch of them with Joe Woods Coning Tools.

None of the big box stores around here have a decent selection of wet/dry sand paper.  Stopped at the local Ace Hardware in town.  The carried a Scotch 3M Indoor Carpet Tape that measured .004.  They sold wet/dry Rhino Brand paper by the sheet.  It's a llitle thinner than the 3M paper, so everything worked out okay.

Coned my Rice 50 C weight last night.  I can start a dry patched ball flush with the muzzle using thumb pressure.

Go to the lumberyard and buy what they have.
Almost any of it will work.
I like the not so sticky stuff that removes easier on one side works good for sticking paper to plexiglas sanding boards.

I get the black emery paper from NAPA. I start with 220, & get it most of the way with it, then use 320, then 600, then 1000, then 2000 paper.

Joe's coning tools do a nice job & I have coned a couple dozen barrels with them & never had a problem with any of the tools in any caliber. just take your time & don't be in a hurry.

Getting ready to attack my barrel and appreciate the info here. I gather I should remove the barrel from the stock, is it advisable to pull the breech plug too?

buff, push a tightly patched cleaning jag down the bore about a foot or so and unscrew the rod, after coning, just replace the rod and pull it out with all the junk.    mark
