at Little John"s auction house

I know little to nothing about determining authenticity etc. and way beyond my budget anyway.

Would like to have seen the signature stamp.  There were several makers turning out rifles in St. Louis contemporary to the Hawken boys, using similar design.  Frankly, I doubt this is a Hawken rifle.

Art is not an object.  It is the excitement inspired by the object.

There is a rifle in the Huntington WV Museum of Art that was presented as a Hawken
but I think it's an Ohio rifle and when the collection's cases were opened I took it off the wall
and looked at the top of the barrel and it was marked "Hawken,St.Louis"with the same style of
metal stencils I use on my locks and triggers.

Look at the pics again, the signature er, stamp is there. You can even enlarge it to see it clearly.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Cool rifle regardless of who actually made it.  Despite all the "patina," and it sure is very dark with a LOT of said patina, it seems remarkably clean under that patina.  Interesting.

Super cool peep sight and super simple.  I built a short little German rifle for a guy in Germany a number of years ago and he wanted the same kind of thing added, based off some book photo of an old German gun.  I have to tell you, despite the first impression of a primitive (almost crude if you think about it, certainly compared to so many later peep sights) nature, that sucker was accurate as all get out.

Don where are you, what do you think of this?

I looked at this rifle this weekend in Denver.. Its a good rifle and well marked. The sights have obviously been added but otherwise looked straight to me.. I liked it. It don't match my thinking of a plains rifle as the caliber is smaller. I see they are saying 45 cal.  In my weak memory I would have guessed it a bit small. But can't say for sure.  Louie

I admit I have little experience here...but,
the panels look Hawken, ?   ?
the cheek piece looks Hawken, but kinda small.   ?  ?
"from the road" the profile is similar to Hawken.  ?   ?

Aye or nay ? ?

I would trust Louiees in person evaluation over my"from pictures only" view
Still some details I don't like ,despite some features that look good Would love to know who had it at Denver

Little John had it there for all to see... I am not saying its my ideal Hawken. But still a nice rifle though a bit different..

Is there a hard, unbreakable law that says all Hawken rifles MUST look a certain way??

Au contaire. There are lots of variations. The rarity would be two identical ones
There are just enough fakes in existence and still being made that you get cautious
I didn't like some features on this one. Might just be the pictures. A first hand visit would be necessary to seriously consider bidding.

Don the main things I didn't like were the triggers and trigger guard. They are original to the gun, but not what you would prefer on a Hawken. It's also a late rifle. LP

The Hawken Bros. made several variants of their Missouri rifles.  My late Uncle's Hawken rifle is .32 caliber, plain walnut,  and brass mounted.  From seeing other "odd" Hawken rifles as a younger man in Missouri, I suspect that Hawken made far more money selling to farmers and the like than they did with their celebrated Rocky Mountain rifles.  Thus I would be slow to condemn the unusual.
